Is there any evidence whatsoever that they have better mentalities than the others? Godfrey's looks likely to be relegated for the 2nd time in 3 seasons as a PL footballer, i'm not sure i'd be championing him as a leader of men.

Pace doesn’t make a good centre back, if it did Demarai Gray would be our best centre back.
For me Godfrey has only really impressed at left back since he’s been here.

Pace is the only thing our all time, most successful captain, Kevin Radcliffe had, and Des Walker too.
Both went on to win top honours and a multitude of International Caps, when surrounded by quality players, not the inferior quality Ben is playing with at Everton.
He doesn't read the game well, and is poor aerially. I don't honestly think he's is better than our other options. His attitude is at least usually good, so for that alone, he does probably deserve a go.
It never helps when you have to go back 40 years to find a player to compare someone to.
I agree on principle, but he wasn't - he filled in as a RB once or twice and was much better, but obviously a centre back playing at right back situation.
Still, one of our only players who seems willing to run forward and at people, shockingly. lol
He did it quite well from CB as well, and his pass to DCL against West Ham was sexual.
You say it doesn't, but Distin had pace and the fact he's tall - everything else was helped on by the players around him - and he was a rock for how many seasons. Granted, the players around him aren't great, but Godfrey's been good at CB as well.
Hopefully he gets to actually get a run of games at CB to begin with to be honest - he usually gets switched around everywhere across the back 4 on a game by game basis anyway.
Distin was great in the air and read the game very well, two key attributes for a centre back that Godfrey doesn’t possess. I disagree about Godfrey being good at CB, I’ve never felt comfortable with him there, he is very flawed.
But he does possess them though? He came to us as a CB and played as a CB for his previous team, we just shoehorn him everywhere because it's us.
I've not felt comfortable with Holgate as a CB either like, yet he gets starts despite being truly limited on all fronts?

Last game out he was obviously shattered after barely playing, but that's the post-COVID effect for you I suppose.
He's probably the best young defender in the country. Was in Southgate's provisional England squad for the Euros.
