Distin was good in the air, pacey, good positional sense, plus he had one massive plus Ben doesn't possess. That is, an equally reliable in every sense partner in Jags. That, plus the fact both were settled in their positions and knew exactly each others strengths and weaknesses.
I get the feeling the point of a settled, reliable partner being key is the point @DualityNSNO is alluding to, though of course I have read it wrong.

Spot on what I was going for as well - Distin was a pace merchant at best and a decent defender second, but he had the absolute reverse in Jags as a partner.
Godfrey has played with everyone at CB for a game or two, left back for a bit, right back for a bit... Not the lad's fault obviously, but I'd prefer we settle at something any time soon ffs, and I hope that we don't settle in the Championship instead lol
Tbh he's not a left back and he only played there for us because of no one else to fill in.
We also played a flat back 4, which meant he wasn't exactly the kind of "left back" that was needed anyway, so it's even more square pegs in round holes.

I feel a bit sorry for the lad to a degree. He has been at the club for eighteen minutes, played under forty two different managers with totally contrasting styles of play in twenty seven different positions each with a different role to play, has missed six years this season alone through illness and injury and has aged nineteen years.
For the life of me I cannot fathom why he hasn't blossomed into prime time Maldini. The dosser. SELL!
