Not making excuses for him but being shunted round all over the place can’t be good for either his confidence or his development. I don’t really get the people asking why he was going backwards for the 2nd goal either, it’s because he’s a right footed centre half not a left back, seems pretty obvious to me.

Can we stop blaming Covid for his performances, his fitness maybe but not winning headers, putting in half hearted tackles, wrong positioning, poor decision making.

If he's still feeling the effects of Covid then don't make yourself available to play.
I thought he was excellent last year and loved almost everything about his performances . covid might be a factor but to put it down for everything we’ve seen from him this season would feel a bit Delusional.

Truth is he's all over the place at centre half aswell. I agree its not ideal that he has to cover other positions( wasnt that mentioned when he signed? His versatility)
But he's a bit headless chicken wherever he plays.
Whisper it. But he might just not be that good.

Agree, Holgate was equally at fault for passing the ball across to a right footed player in a left sided position, if he had a quicker footballing brain he wouldn't have thought it out

Yeh he might not be that good that’s true. What I’m saying is that being moved around the back 4 probably isn’t helping him produce his best though, whatever level that may be. Don’t really remember any talk of him being able to play full back when he signed just some mentions that he’d played midfield before.

He said the exact thing himself in his first interview when he signed. He said he could play anywhere along the back four.
But its more to do with the clubs awful recruitment that we have no recognised cover for both full back positions.
We're run like an amateur outfit.

.….forget the disastrous back pass, there was two incidents in the 2nd half that were more of a concern.

Attacker cuts in from the left and unsurprisingly goes past Keane like he’s not there, it ends up with Godfrey losing a 50/50 with an attacker 8 yards out. The attacker misses a sitter. 10 minutes later they break through the middle, Godfrey is on the half-way line with an opponent yards away. The opponent leaves Godfrey yards behind, I’m waiting for those afterburners to kick in but there was nothing.

I like the lad lots and argue in his favour but the critics are right, he’s currently woeful.

It’s absolutely nothing to do with playing out of position or not having a regular partner. I don’t know what has turned Ben Godfrey into Rodney Trotter but something has to be very wrong.

I guess the easy answer is Covid but when mistakes keep happening it tends to be confidence

Never a footballer. Never.

It's a crime what someone his height and strength does and doesn't do in the air. He jumps into a challenge with his back to the ball to avoid contact with it with his head.

Any player - more especially a defender - should be transfer listed immediately for consistently doing that.

I've seen enough. This is not a professional footballer. He needs to be gone ASAP.

I do t remember that. I remember him saying pretty early on that he was happy to play anywhere when asked about being played out of position but that’s a very different thing. Assuming he did say it though I very much doubt he expected to play literally all across the back 4 in the space of 7 games which is the point I was trying to make. If you think moving around is helping him then we’ll just agree to disagree.

He's been making mistakes ever since he joined the club. He's just another example of players who were enormously overrated too soon by our fans, and it actually hurts the player's long term development. He doesn't sense danger, he is very poor in the air, and he is very poor and passing the ball forwards. He needs time out of the side to work on his weaknesses.

The same happenned with Holgate. One or two good games under Ancelotti and the far better than Stones shouts appeared.

Maybe our supporters will finally realise someday soon that our better players just aren't as good as we think they are. If they were, then we wouldn't be an irrelevance in midtable and the most boring club to follow in English football.
