I think it’s an overpay and I don’t like the idea of buying players specifically for a manager who isn’t going to be here in two years at the absolute longest. They are phantom bids.

The deals Everton are offering are only taken up by the truly desperate to sell. Basically buy now pay later deals...and that's why we've had to wait for two seasons to get a striker in.

A phantom bid is one that is not actually lodged with the selling team, but pushed out by the club or media to make it look like we are trying to bring players in...

We literally lodged a bid for this guy otherwise he wouldn't be here now.

I'm sure every team pushes information out to the media for an agenda of some sort, what you're suggesting is true of everyone in some instances.

There;'s a fine line between a phantpom bid in that strict sense and one placed as a low ball bid to see if there's an unlikley interest in it.

We basically got away with two this summer with Chermiti and Beto. Dozens have been laughed out of the room.
