2024/25 Beto

Did I mention either of them?

They’re not good enough either, for different reasons. That doesn’t make this fella capable at this level mate. He’s just way off the pace of the game most of the time. Took his goals really well last weekend but they’re one of the worst sides in the league.

Really hope he succeeds, just can’t see it to be honest. When everything is in his favour, he’s a handful. Days like today when he needs to be an outlet, he struggles massively.

You replied to my post which directly compared them. Nobody thinks Beto is a great striker!

We had two great overlapping fullbacks in those teams .... with pace .....

Were Coleman and Baines particularly pacey? I don't think so. What you want is a particular style of play with blistering forwards on the counter attack and that's fine, but we don't necessarily need to go down that way. We could also look to control the middle of the middle of the park and pin teams back like we did under Moyes the first time around - especially at Goodison. The point is we need to be much better than we are now no matter what style we choose.

Even DM has identified we need pace 2nd time around ....

It's just very one dimensional thinking. Beto is quick and Lindstrom is quick but it does absolutely nothing for our attacking play. Give me players that can retain the ball in the final third above them all day long.
Yeah you’re right. People have got obsessed with physical attributes because we’re so lacking in actual footballing ability that the ability to just do someone for pace or bully someone in the air is all they can imagine us doing and they’ve convinced themselves it’s our inability to do that that’s the issue.

I was saying last week that people see it all wrong when they say we try to use Beto as a target man and everything would just be fine if we played through balls instead - we don’t try to, we just have to, because we can’t impose ourselves enough to use a striker in any other way. Whoever we play up front simply has to be able hold the ball up and give defenders a bit of a going over because otherwise they’ll never touch the ball. One game against an absolutely woeful Leicester and people were convinced they’d been proved right but they’re conspicuous by their absence tonight.
