2024/25 Beto

Yeah you’re right. People have got obsessed with physical attributes because we’re so lacking in actual footballing ability that the ability to just do someone for pace or bully someone in the air is all they can imagine us doing and they’ve convinced themselves it’s our inability to do that that’s the issue.

I was saying last week that people see it all wrong when they say we try to use Beto as a target man and everything would just be fine if we played through balls instead - we don’t try to, we just have to, because we can’t impose ourselves enough to use a striker in any other way. Whoever we play up front simply has to be able hold the ball up and give defenders a bit of a going over because otherwise they’ll never touch the ball. One game against an absolutely woeful Leicester and people were convinced they’d been proved right but they’re conspicuous by their absence tonight.

That doesnt mean anything mate coz thats par for the course on here for any player or the manager. Its not even flavour of the month. Its flavour of the week.
Its easy to criticise that it was just leicester but we also have strikers here that wouldnt have probably finished those chances.
We dont have any consistency at the club in that dept. Or quality. If calvert lewin scores. He's quality. If beto scores. He's quality.
Its just a forum fad for a few hours. I think everyone knows the reality is different.

This is very true and largely down to the fact the forward ends up being so isolated. I really think this is down to the fact our full backs are nowhere to be seen in the league final third. We made Gordon look like a terrible footballer for his last 6 months at this club. Not because he is but due to the fact he had absolutely no support from anyone in the team - especially from whoever was supposed to be overlapping behind him.

It also doesn't help that DCL and Beto are so poor with the ball at their feet. Neither of them can pass a ball properly and neither of them can shoot from outside the box. Absolute dream from the opposition centre halves point of view.

No I’m not criticising Beto by saying it’s only Leicester, I’m saying the people who were so quick to jump in with their ‘I told you so’ should really have acknowledged that doing it against Leicester (and Peterborough, the other example used) isn’t evidence that it will work against better sides. I have no doubt Beto would be better if we could just release him with slide rule balls all the time, my point is we’re just not capable of doing that.

It's just very one dimensional thinking. Beto is quick and Lindstrom is quick but it does absolutely nothing for our attacking play. Give me players that can retain the ball in the final third above them all day long.

Our best striker in the prem era could probably be described as that. Lukaka couldnt hold or retain the ball. But he was quick and knew how to finish if you put the ball in front of him.
If you've got someone putting the ball in the net i wouldnt knock it.

Lukaku could do things with the ball our current strikers never will. Remember his goal against Chelsea in the cup? No chance DCL or Beto could ever pull something like that off. While Lukaku didn't do that consistently it at least gave opposition defenders the concern he could.

It was rare he did that but in general i was talking about your point of hold up play. The ball bounced off him most times with his back to goal.
Knock it in front and say chase that. Different matter. We all want a bit of guile. But i'll take a goal scorer first.

The biggest problem we have is we cant keep hold of the ball and keep giving it away from nothing positions .. Beto cant hold up the ball or do much link up play … He took his 2 goals well last week and fair play to him but we need much than that with the team we have and the style of football we are playing .. Today we kept loosing possession far to easliy and that is what cost us the game. On days like today our strikers really stand out as poor…

Describing Beto as a Poundland Lukaku would be fair tbh.

His weaknesses are the same but more pronounced, his strengths as well just nowhere near as strong in those areas.

It's why one was a 20-25 goals a season striker and the others a 10-12 one.

Did Moyes make Anichebe a better player? Could it be a similar effect with Beto? If Moyes can get an Everton team Into the champions league with Marcus Bent playing up front, anything is possible.
I’d say no, he was with us nearly 10 yrs and got 18 goals. Did any of the other top clubs come after him ? He left to go to West Brom and got 6 goals in 55.

Early in moyes’s last reign, we didn’t have goal scoring strikers, but that changed towards the end with, Andy Johnson, yakubu, Saha and jelivic. Not world beaters but much better than Anichebe and bent. Moyes ain’t stupid, he knows we ain’t getting anywhere with Beto as his number 9

For all Lukaku's issues with his first touch, when he was on the ball he showed (on more than one occasion) that he could travel with it under close control.

He was reliable with 1vs1s, finishing near the 6yd line and heading too. Oh to have a player like him, again.

He was arguably the best striker in the PL when he was with us for all the trampoline shin shouts.

Player of his ilk would be four times the price now.
