Wow, just wow. Honestly they're brilliant.

ta very much, kidda!

the secret is to get yoursen a big-sensor camera, and bag a couple of cheap old manual lenses of ebay (get prime lenses...no zooms)...then spend a few hours whenever you get the chance to pop out and just experiment, peering through the nice big optical viewfinder to find your picture...keep the camera on M-mode at all times, make sure you control everything (good way to learn).

Nowadays good gear is cheap. you can get one of Canon 10D or Olympus E-1 (classic old DSLR's with still-stunning image-quality in good light) + a few old lenses (OM Zuikos are amazing...get the 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 + cheapo extension tubes for macro, + the 200mm f4), get the adaptor too, and all in for a little over 200 squid. Get an old Photoshop CD of Ebay for a couple of quid too, no need to have the newer versions.

Most of my pics were taken with old gear like that.

if you've already got a DSLR, then just bag a decent old manual lens, and only use the viewfinder & set everything to manual...it'll be a buzz!

I've just bought a Canon 650D/Rebel T4i mate. Looking at getting a new lens for it but was going to get an all purpose one like the Sigma one.

Nah...all-purpose lenses are jack of all trades, master of none. you'll end up just doing snapshots of everything. you've got everything in that lens: wide-angle, superzoom, tele, autofocus, stabiliser...it sounds perfect...but the truth is it won't inspire you. photography's an artform, innit.

here, i found summing that will set you back total less than 40 squid:

i used to have exactly this lens with those accessories on my Canon & Olympus DSLR's. Some of the pics i linked here were taken with that lens. i'd never be able to take pics like that with a Sigma Superzoom. first of all, the quality of a prime Zuiko lens is far better than a modern superzoom. Secondly, the Zuiko offers f1.8 aperture, which will be a revelation for your people-photography.

but it's all manual mate...no autofocus...tho' your 650D will meter the light still. the flexi-screen is very handy to have, but try and use the optical viewfinder as much as possible...hunt your image using that.

good luck...and post your results here, matey!

The spider in the outhouse is still happy to peep out occasionally. Here is a nice close up of her pretty eyes I took today, using the 100mm lens and two extension tubes (13mm and 21mm) and cropped to half the image and squared and rotated.

There is so little wildlife about in February, I guess I'm lucky to have this lady into her third year. Spider is about as large as 2p coin when she is stood on a flat surface in a relaxed position. here, she is in her web, more of a nest than a web with these arachnids...
