'Breaking News that nobody is interested in' ...

Just discovered my 6th Great Grandfather on Ancestry

My father in law got really excited when he started tracing his ancestry, for some reason he through he was thought he was going to be related to royalty or nobility at the very least.

Turns out they were all navies who worked on the railways.

At they point he stopped the research for some reason lol

He was born in 1720 , but on one branch I have managed to trace it back to 1405.

That's impressive. Got back to about 1800 on each of my parents side. On my father's side it goes back to Ireland which is stony ground for genealogy. I worked with a guy whose family had always lived in a market town in Lincolnshire. He got back to 1500 via local church records.

My great grandfather played a part in the whole Daens' (maybe you've seen the weird movie) movement in Belgium. Basically a movement that introduced socialism to the mainstream in Belgium and in part Flemish awareness, since they had interwoven it with Christianity (very popular at the time). "Christene volkspartij" (nothing to radical really: universal suffrage, prohibition of child labour, insurance for sick workers etc...). Basically a priest that was shocked about the degrading working conditions for workers, and decided to do something about it. The problem was that the traditional catholic party, bourgeoisie and the Church weren't happy about it.

Didn't work out too well for my great-grandfather though. He won the elections, but they refused to appoint him since he was a Daensist. They refused for two years, he died and then they refused to bury him because he was part of the party. A few decades later they did name a street after him though.
