Bryan Oviedo

If Oviedo leaving means Garbutt staying I'm in.
I can honestly see Oviedo staying, and starting a lot of games on the left side of midfield. Reasons?

1- Pienaar's age. With increasing injury issues, he must almost be done now.
2- The status of most of our other wide players: Atsu and Lennon are both on loan and will probably leave in the summer, Mirallas may or may not be on his way (please God I hope he stays!) and McGeady is IMHO not starting quality.
3- Baines' age. Garbutt may be the long-term replacement (fingers crossed), but you still need two players who can cover the position. When Baines calls it a day, that's Oviedo and Garbutt.

The trick is getting Oviedo and Garbutt to accept bit-part roles for the present.

It's hard to put a figure we would accept for Oviedo. We paid anywhere from 2-5 for him and I do think he has been successful for us.

I think he is very underrated for us. He is quick and a very competent defender. Also he is decent going forward. I also think his versatility makes him a very useful player. He can play at LB/Lm also in central midfield or on the right hand side. I personally could see him playing right back as well and really wouldn't mind him filling in there if Coleman needed a rest or got injured. The lad also looks like a very good pro.

Given that in mind I would be wanting in excess of 6 million for him. As other posters have said though I think the key is to convince him that he will get game time as part of the rotation. he is a good age (24?) and we should be looking to keep him and Garbutt. ideally I would see Baines maybe playing more in midfield, Garbutt becoming a first choice left back, while Oviedo being a bit of a utility man.

We need a pie chart.
We've probably only ever lost twice when he has started.

Unfortunately I see this as being key to Garbutt staying/going.

If Brian stays then Garbutt will certainly be away to force his way into a first team somewhere else.
If Brian goes then there is a direct path into the first team here.

I think a lot might ride on what exactly the Garbutt situation is at the moment. IF he's said Garbutt's going already then there's no reason to let Brian go, if not then at least there's something new to bring to the table.

I suppose I see Oviedo as more of a utility man and I think Martinez does too. Martinez has been looking to sign left backs so I think he views Oviedo as not an automatic left back starter. I also think he will look to play Baines in midfield. With the way we play our fullbacks needs a top engine, which Baines still has, but if it starts to wane a little he might be deployed in other roles.

The problem though is Baines is a left back who provides width. Playing him as a DM doesn't work, it's not what he does, also he at the wrong end of his career to suddenly become a tricksy playmaker/forward to fit in the three behind Rom. The only place he fits in the system is at left back.

Brian can play on the left of that three just behind Rom. This is how Bobby has been fitting him in to get him the game time to get him fit again and keep him happy whilst also playing Baines. Unfortunately it's Kev's position who until recently has been the only one of those three behind Rom showing some sort of gumption (maybe not the case after after the summer but who knows)

Garbutt you could argue could play both positions (though his crossing would be lost in our narrow midfield) but he's behind Baines and Brian for the LB slot and Kev and Brian (and perhaps others) for the midfield slot.

There doesn't seem to be many options for Luke, if Brian wasn't there he be up the pecking order in two positions.

The best overall answer might be to cash in on Baines. If we could get some serious money for him this summer then you'd have to go looking for good reasons to keep him and letting one of the other younger two go.

Man I see Oviedo as a future LM, right now there is no width over there and nearly all the attack is coming through the middle or down the right. Oviedo can cover Baines or make the advance himself, and right now Mirallas and Naismith provide none of that.
