Even as an Oscar winner, he still seemed never to have been taken seriously as an actor.

The epitome of cool at the time.

One of the only straight fellas that could carry off a tache like that.

Top actor.

Although the film was nominated, I don't think it won any Oscars. His only nomination was for Boogie Nights. Exactly right on the rest of what you say though. Deserved a bit more respect but no one can't say he didn't live a life.

You're right, I thought he won an Oscar for it.

Still an all time classic film and Duelling Banjos is an all time great too.

Seeing him as a young actor he looked a lot like Brando.

Indeed, a lot of people said that to him at the time and he even had beef with Brando at one point for doing a role which was a loose impression of him. He said that is why he grew his moustache.

I was brought up in the 70's on a staple diet of misogynistic Reynolds movies. All of them absolutely awesome as well. RIP.
