Homepage Article Can Godfrey do a job in midfield?

Play Ben next to a dominant centre back, and this lad will be the next Des Walker.
Fast as f%*$ and covers the ground like a sprinter.
Kevin Ratcliffe couldnt head a ball either and look how good he turned out to be.

Its got to be 2 from Godfrey, Mina and Branthwaite until the end of the season at centre back.

Then we sell Mina, Keane and Holgate and use the funds to sign one top partner for Godfrey. Branthwaite becoming a rotation option for either of them.

He's not good enough technically to play fullback in possession. So no unless we're trying to be Burnley. And even then probably still no.

I refer M'Lud to the precedent set...or in his case Not set, by John Stones.
Where my learn'd friend @davek mooted a similar point Re. 'The Barnsley Beckenbuaer'.
This in the face of all the evidence (IF he was that good) that at the lower level of, with all due respect, Barnsley, he couldn't even get a game as a Centre Back, never mind Mid Field.
To which my learn'd friend countered with (gist) "Pep ( he knows a thing or two about players) will be playing him there soon you'll see."

...5yrs and still waiting for his Mid Field debut.*
The same was said about Yobo and Jagielka.

*though if by 'Mid Field' you mean run about a lot in a headless chicken / Kante-esque - but without the skill - manner (trying to) kick people but having no real passing ability, aka, a space filler / extra body
Give Onyango a go
Horses for Courses
Sq pegs in Sq holes etc

That's a 'No' from me and a goodnight from him

Seeing as he can’t pass a ball 5 yards I would guess that putting him in the centre of the pitch would not go well. I’d rather holgate play there over him tbh and I’m not keen on that idea either

I think he suffers from being a good utility player. Whoever comes in next needs to settle the back 4 down. getting a cohesive unit is a must. Constantly chopping and changing the back line is never a good idea. The best teams have settled defences.

I think he suffers from not being good at any one position myself . He’s a great athlete but has average technical ability at best, can’t read or defend crosses , positionally he is not good and for a cb he loses his man a lot . Those weaknesses in the middle of the pitch would have us getting over run more than we already are

He's a CB but needs a big commanding partner alongside him.

Mina is that man but he's not fit enough to form a long term partnership.

I love Mina but with his wages I think him and Holgate need moving on in the summer and we bring in a quality CB who can stay fit long term to partner Godfrey.

It really is unlucky that Mina is so injury prone because he's quality...if he doesn't have a long run in the team before the summer then you are probably right about moving him on
