Homepage Article Can Godfrey do a job in midfield?

Imagine Patterson-Godfrey-Braithwaite-Mykolenko at the back! it would be lol but would not be worse imho and at least would be prepping for the future. But yeah, but Mina in there as 'captain' and it ought to be ok surely, until we get bullied...

I dunno lads, i'm going crazy, but investing in the future seems like the only positive thing to do now.
Got to get the CBs sorted.
I'd be just rotating through Patterson, Coleman, Myko, maybe Holgate as sub depending on the match.

You'd get the same problem with 3CBs, inevitably Keane and Holgate would be involved bc of injuries, it would never settle, go backwards nothing gained.

That pace though...goes past one player then accelerates and all of a sudden, the oppositions back four are panicking...
Think he'd be excellent with 3 CB, given time, where that pace come off the line could cause all sorts of mayhem, he'd be free to go attack the player with ball while being covered by the other 2. But that sort of thing could be a disaster at the moment. Got to see out the rest of the season.

The pace out wide doesn't equate to pace through the middle, he'd be going nowhere trying to dribble beat two CM+

Never seen anything to make me think he'd be any good in midfield... his main attacking strength is galloping through from the back.

No harm in trying. Lots of players go through this phase and end up in a different position than they originally thought they would (Coleman/Bale/etc.)

Yeah, if we are innovative and just tell a pair that 'you are the first choice we want to invest in' maybe tell them privately and also tell Keane, Holgate and Mina that they have to work on x,y,z and compete to get back in, then it is healthy competition. At the moment it's like a game of musical chairs or random selection to see who's in the starting XI. That Nkonkou or Small are not here to replace Digne is terrible but that's over now, we may still need nkonkou to compete with Mykolenko next season, but it would be nice if a first choice back 4 were told, 'you are the future' and they work towards it.

If his positioning is poor at centre-back, it's unlikely to be any better in midfield.

Normally, paying what we did for a utility player would go down as a disaster, but when you look at some of the others that have arrived in recent years, getting a £25m John O'Shea doesn't seem too bad.

Tbh I don't think he is ever going to be a defender so might as well try him in midfield, I know he has played there before.
It is very difficult for him. He has played in 4 different positions across the back due to our boards inability to get a proper squad. That is not easy esp when playing along side the absolute rubbish we haven. Keane?, a senior coleman, jjk, holgate. It must be a nightmare.

He does look out of sorts at times and gets caught on set pieces but he isnt the only one and no protection from a 2 man midfield and covid and a range of managers. His positioning can be worked on.Tell me a player who wouldnt struggle with the above.

He has very good attributes. Strong, fast and has a touch. With a settled manager, a proper team he will be a player. And can make it as a top central defender if given time and confidence.

Maybe worth giving it a go in front of Branthwaite and Mina just to see what he's like; those at Shrewsbury were full of praise for him as a defensive midfielder so you never know.

What worries me long-term is his general lack of aerial ability and his inability to sniff danger whilst being the last line of defence. Perhaps playing him at DM would nullify these to a degree whilst allowing him to do more boss slideys and 80-yard foot races.

We've been completely overrun at times in midfield and we're lacking a proper holding midfielder, While Godfrey is good in the tackle he's easily pushed around in the air which isn.t good for a defender. It may be worth giving him a go in a midfield 3 alongside Allan and Decorcoure, with Gray, Calvin-Lewin and Richarlison as a front 3.

I think he’s a squad player for the back line. Don’t think the lad is ever going to nail a CB spot tbh.

He's absolute athlete he has that going for him . He'll put himself about which is what we need but to play an all action midfield you have to have some sort of football intelligence . Here he is lacking .
I would love to see him crunch people in midfield and that would lift the crowd but he will keep passing the ball back which is the last thing we need .
