Can we finish in the top 4?

No chance, the squad is too small and as said, we arent consistent enough against the slop of the league.

First XI

Howard
Neville Distin Jags Baines
Naismith Osman Gibson Pienaar
Fellaini Jelavic

Second XI

Mucha
Hibbert, Heitinga, Duffy, ?
Coleman, Barkley, Gueye
Mirallas, Vellios, Anichibe

Neville could double as the other LB or DM.

Every other top 8 team from last season will be playing in europe this season and we will be well rested. And assuming Man City, Man U and Chelsea take the top 3 spots, I don't see why Everton can't beat Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal to fourth. Especially when that train wreck of a coach AVB is at Tottenham - they will take at least 1/4 of a season to get going. Arsenal just sold RVP and haven't replaced him as yet - Podolski has been playing attacking mid for the last 2 years, and Newcastle won't have as good a year as last year with the amount of games they will play. And I'm not even worried about Liverpool. Not cocky, but they have two decent players Suarez and Sahin... and their most expensive signing Carroll sits on the bench.... imagine that - they could have spent the Carroll money on someone like Hazard but now they have Joe Cole and Carroll...

also its early in the season - but I see there being a lot of 'pest' teams like West Brom, Fulham, Swansea, Sunderland catching the 'bigger' teams on a day off. They will be right up there it seems. I would not be surprised if Liverpool did worse than last season while trying to adjust to Rodger's style.

arsenal's back 5 today
Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs

ouch. i know there's a few injuries, but the regulars aren't too much of a step up. i predicted them 4th but their 1st team and squad is not anything to be feared of

To illustrate the point above

Here is the "table" showing the final points based on results so far this season & using last season's results for unfulfilled fixtures (i.e. the rest of the season) with Reading, Soton & WHU replacing Bolton, Blackburn & Wolves respectively. Not looking too bright for the RS or Villa. Looking great for Chelsea, Everton & Swansea so far.

1 Manchester City (C) 38 +62 89
2 Manchester United 38 +54 86

3 (+3) Chelsea 38 +24 69
4 (-1) Arsenal 38 +24 68
5 (-1) Tottenham Hotspur 38 +23 66
6 (-1) Newcastle United 38 +2 64
7 Everton 38 +14 61

8 (+3) Swansea City 38 +4 52
9 Fulham 38 +1 52
10 West Bromwich Albion 38 −1 51
11 (-3) Liverpool 38 +2 49
12 (+1) Sunderland 38 0 46
13 (+1) Stoke City 38 −12 46
14 (-2) Norwich City 38 −19 45

Is it me or does that need more explanation?

Is it me or does that need more explanation?

The games we've already won (Villa and Man Utd) are added to the points we won against the remaining teams last season. For example Man Utd are down to 86 this season from 89 because they won 1-0 at Goodison last season, this year they lost.

That table means nothing though really, although quite interesting. West Brom will be a massive test for us to see how this season may pan out, never an easy away game and they always seem to cause us trouble. Our team is looking brilliant though and maybe Mirallas will get more time on the pitch.

We're up five points this year as opposed to the same fixtures from last year, basically. It's a decent way of checking how we're doing vs how we did last year though two games is a bit too early.

To echo what many have said, squad is not in depth enough and the top 5 teams in the country (United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs) have more quality in their side. It's not about being negative or pessimistic, it's not realistic to actually think we can finish above such teams if you ask me, but I'm sure we'll give it a hell of a shot. We've started the season exceptionally well, but we can't maintain this sort of form all season. Anyway, a European qualification spot would be an outstanding achievement if you ask me, European nights at Goodison would be boss and I'd be chuffed. Let's not get carried away because we're playing some proper class football, enjoy the moment but we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.

Even though it's only two games, those are two games we would usually get a total of 0-2pts from, so I say it's not too early to see the team has a 'January' mentality right from the off. In other words we already have the quality of players we normally don't have until the end of the January transfer window. The players know it and are proving it by the team's performances. I know we once started with three wins and almost got relegated but we all know this is a different Everton team.
