It's one of two things - downplaying expectations ahead of bringing in a Moyes or Howe, or Ancelotti's team are annoyed at the leaks and want it stamping out.

The latter would explain why Balague etc. are getting conflicting info to Myers/Sky, because the leaks would be local to Everton.

Unfortunately, I think it's actually more likely to be the former.

Barring being told by Ancelotti's agent that the leaks are unacceptable (which I think is a long shot), there's no reason for that statement if it was Ancelotti. They wouldn't care about hype building if the net result was that manager getting the job.
