Since Howard?

Hes the best manager in our entire history mate.

Christ have some respect on his name.

Howard is the perfect example though. Unbelievably good in his pomp but not so good in his latter years. Ancelotti was a great manager 5 to 10 years ago. Since then he has been pretty underwhelming. Hopefully he can turn it around again. However there is a reason he has gone from managing the likes of Juve, Milan, PSG and Madrid to managing Napoli and ourselves. That reason is that he has been distinctly average for half a decade.

Not just one poor season but a collection of poor seasons.

As for Howard he turned a team that was on it's knees into the best team in Europe. That for me outstrips Ancelotti's financially doped pot collecting.

Have you got any pics of Ancelotti training today mate.

The 2 Dons Carlos.

Mate he won the Treble 2 years ago at Bayern.

Finished my rusty pipe.

LOL you aren’t no Everton fan. Nope nope nope nope nope

Top six. Competing at varying levels over the last 20 years. We haven't got far to go then. There is hope for us.

How does my definition differ to yours, you said yours was different?

There is always hope but I’d say we have got a very long way to go. Even with a bottomless pit of cash, it took City 3 years to break at the time what was only a top 4. They also started from a much better point than we did as they already had a chunk of their great side already there before the Sheikh and Mancini arrived.

Now, there's an established top six, possibly even a top 7, which makes the challenge of reaching the top 4 arguably even harder.

It’s also highly debatable we’re going to spend that sort of money while funding a stadium. So, unless we do lob City / PSG levels of spending into the equation, to expect Champions League Football within 3-4 years is unrealistic.

Please dont say the team that has finished 9th, 9th and 12th the last 3 seasons, say it aint so.

It’s a top six.... *possibly* a top seven. Given the manner in which Leicester have performed over the last 12 months, with a young squad and a top manager, they’ll compete with that top six for a couple more seasons yet, in my opinion.

The term “big club”, to me anyway, implies competing regularly for major honours, all of which the current top six do and have done at varying levels over the last 20 years.

The problem with your argument is that the tool you are using to measure "great" clubs is entirely arbitrary. It's basically just your opinion. Which many in the media share. When Ancelotti took over PSG, I believe they hadn't won the title in 19 years. Mourinho just took over Spurs, they haven't won it since the 60's. Are they now great clubs? And the list goes on.

Great clubs have a history. Not just from the birth of the premier era but much longer, generation after generation in fact. By any reasonable assessment Everton are a great club. Indeed, It was one of the first things Ancelotti said in his conference today.

I see the point you're making but I think you've drank too much of the media hype kool-aid.

Like Wolves?

No mate, there is no top 7.

Great post....Beautiful actually.

He was sacked at Bayern while they were Champions.
He was sacked by Chelsea for finishing 2nd.
He was sacked by Napoli for finishing 2nd.

Give me that level of failure every year please Carlo.

When he was sacked at Bayern they were 3rd in a one team League after taking them backwards.

When he was sacked at Chelsea it was because he followed a 86 point season with a 71 point season, going backwards.

You missed out Madrid he was sacked there as well, maybe it might be something to do with finishing 3rd in a two team League.

As for Napoli he was sacked because they are currently 8th.

He is a very good manager but he has had more than his fair share of failures. Lets be realistic we have a very good manager. However putting unrealistic expectations on him simply isn't going to help.
