When he was sacked at Bayern they were 3rd in a one team League after taking them backwards.

When he was sacked at Chelsea it was because he followed a 86 point season with a 71 point season, going backwards.

You missed out Madrid he was sacked there as well, maybe it might be something to do with finishing 3rd in a two team League.

As for Napoli he was sacked because they are currently 8th.

He is a very good manager but he has had more than his fair share of failures. Lets be realistic we have a very good manager. However putting unrealistic expectations on him simply isn't going to help.

I didnt think I needed to list Madrid, you know due to him winning the CL and World Cup.

Real Madrid[193]

Proper weird you.

He was sacked at Bayern while they were Champions.
He was sacked by Chelsea for finishing 2nd.
He was sacked by Napoli for finishing 2nd.

Give me that level of failure every year please Carlo.
Guardiola and Ancelotti both failed at Bayern. It’s shocking that team did not have a period of dominating Europe.

The problem with your argument is that the tool you are using to measure "great" clubs is entirely arbitrary. It's basically just your opinion. Which many in the media share. When Ancelotti took over PSG, I believe they hadn't won the title in 19 years. Mourinho just took over Spurs, they haven't won it since the 60's. Are they now great clubs? And the list goes on.

Great clubs have a history. Not just from the birth of the premier era but much longer, generation after generation in fact. By any reasonable assessment Everton are a great club. Indeed, It was one of the first things Ancelotti said in his conference today.

I see the point you're making but I think you've drank too much of the media hype kool-aid.

It’s not arbitary, as there is a clear system. It’s the only metric that truly matters when determining the size of a club, particularly in relation to the acquisition of top players, who ultimately care about competing at the highest level and playing with and against the very best players.

Consistently competing in the Champions League, where the best players are, and for major honours. The top six have all won league titles, domestic and / or European cups.

PSG are a big club because they win league titles, domestic cups and compete regularly in the Champions League. Spurs are a big club because, although they haven’t won a league title in 50 odd years, they’ve been top 4 and in the Champions League consistently for years and reached the final this year.

It often suits our agenda to say Everton are a big club and in our eyes that’s fine, but it doesn’t matter in any meaningful way. And naturally, Ancelotti is compelled to say we are a big club in his first presser, he’d be foolish not to. We are absolutely a great club, but in my opinion, we’re not amongst England’s elite, or Europe’s elite.

Like Wolves?

No mate, there is no top 7.

In the last 5 years, 2 seasons in the Champions League and 1 League title by this time next year. Might yet have a Cup to add to that too. They’d have a fair shout to be included.

In any case, even if it’s only a top 6, point still stands. Tough nut to crack for any team without a clear recruitment strategy implemented over several years and executed very well (ala Leicester) or a bottomless pit of cash.

As the Goat said earlier, they're the kind of failures we can live with.

They aren’t the kind of “failures” we’ll get though, are they?

What his prior clubs deemed to be failures would patently be our successes, hence the only problem I had with this appointment - overqualified.

Presently but just like quicksand, things can change rapidly. Like opinions on what is a great club. There's so many assumptions in your post, it would be boring reading, to go render each one nonsense.

Its mainly called a top 6 cos of their commercial output coupled with the fees they pay for players and the wages they pay, plus the fact that they compete for all the trophies and CL every year. None of that applies to flash in the pan Leicester City, who in my humble opinion are 2 seasons away from playing Championship football, not CL football.

But we shall see.

What is one assumption that i’ve made?

I was asked to give my opinion on the definition of a big club in context to earlier comments about Ancelotti.

As far as I can see, my opinion on that differs to yours in that we are not one and should aspire to behave more like one (as we have done with this appointment).

You believe we are, which is fair enough. I respect that view too.

Guardiola started 3 seasons at Bayern he won 3 League titles and 2 German Cups.

Ancelotti started 2 seasons and won 1 League title and 0 Cups.

So one of them won 5 out of 6 domestic trophies and the other won 1 out of 4.
