2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

We've got two ways of playing right now.

Defend on edge of the box, try and nick a goal, cling on. Not pretty but effective.

Be more expansive, get overrun in midfield and make relegation threatened teams look like Barca 2011. Not pretty or effective.

Burnley, Newcastle, Fulham haven't played like that all season. McNeil played like David Silva, Harrison Reid like Iniesta, but they don't seem to play like that against anyone else.

It'll take time to sort but we just seem to be doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Until recently we've literally been missing just about 1 player from every match week. If our way to win is literally predicated on having a fully fit squad then what's the point? No team has a fully fit squad every single week and, SHOCKINGLY, some of them still play with attacking intent instead of whatever it is we are "trying" to do.
The minute we play attacking our inept midfield is exposed. Today in the first half it was so bad you'd think we were down to about 9 men.

Until this squad is overhauled these players will let us down. They are unreliable and lots of them are hugely overrated by us as fans.

It is an issue mate. We don't have the players in the squad to sort it, I know.

But, we shouldn't be creating less than Newcastle, should we, by the same token?

It's not even like it's a woolly stat, either. It's one you use to find how creative a team is.

As I've said, it's all about structure, to me. If you just have a few ways in which you can create opportunities, you're not so reliant on one or two players.

Davies showed it today. He got forward and drilled in a brilliant cross, and we scored.

But they should be working on those moves all of the time. It should always be there, ingrained in. Like muscle memory.

I'm seeing no evidence after 15 months that we've got anything of the sort and even with the caveats, I don't think that's good enough.

Indeed, and it comes back to why I don't understand how and why Iwobi started today. It was purely to keep a shape that Ancelotti has been using - it didn't seem to matter to him if the personnel were crap and out of form, he just wanted the shape. "We need a number 10 but I need to rest Sigurdsson, so I'll put Iwobi there" instead of "I don't have a number 10, let's do something different."

Which is bizarre as that isn't Ancelotti's modus operandi - he's a pragmatic manager.

And, I'll say it for the last time to avoid boring people, that diamond shape is absolutely awful and shouldn't be used.

Again, how is that NOT on Carlo? It's HIS job to minimize exposure to the players there. We ALL know the midfield is terrible. It's been terrible for 2 years. Carlo's job is to make sure that how he sets us up isn't going to have us completely and utterly dominated.

And, not for nothing, we had Doucoure and Allan in midfield for about 7 matches after the first Liverpool match and we still were walked right through. The same midfield that was present when we won 7 straight.

People need to decide if they want results or attacking football because with these players you can't have both.

We are effective when we park the bus. We are a shambles when we tweak the system to be aggressive. Carlo needs to stop pandering to those demanding free flowing football and stick to his instincts which are that these players are unreliable and things need to be very simple for them.
So we're employing one of the supposed best managers of all time to coach everton to park the bus, play awful football and maybe get a European place, where we'll get humped by a second rate Czech team who play decent football? Playing that way is like like having fat sam in the hot seat. It's awful, predictable football and we havent got a clue offensively. We are so easy to defend against it's a joke, especially if our opponents go a goal or 2 ahead. Surely we should be expecting better from one of the top coaches of all time.

Maybe he's another Mourinho, who has won most of his trophies by playing negative, defensive football. Or maybe he has been lucky in that he has inherited teams with world class players who would win no matter who was coaching them.

Whatever the story is, the football under him has been nothing short of dire, and if it was koeman, silva or sam coaching that cr@p, they would be getting slaughtered.

Granted, our players aren't great either. There is no pattern or style of play. Get it to digne for a cross to dcl is the only identifiable pattern I've noticed so far.

We are just too predictable. As an attacking side, we look absolutely clueless.

If Carlo walks tomorrow these performances aren’t going to change. We are dealing with a core that has let us down consistently for two seasons straight. They perked up for a honey moon period for Duncan and then two games later they reverted. They perked up when Carlo arrived and then 3/4 games later they reverted. Squad is full of garbage, gutless, good for nothings. Only turn up when they can be arsed.

I'm not sure what else he could have done tonight. They bossed the game until they went 2-0 up and then hit the post. That wasn't the team selection, that was the players.
We shouldn't be getting beaten at home by Burnley.

the manager sets the tactics, picks the players

We are totally incapable of controlling spells of matches with any composure

Teams with much worse squads than ours can do it, yet we can't.

That is on the manager. He's been here 15 months. As much as it's on the recruitment (which hasn't been good enough) and the players themselves.

I don’t think the fans would make that great a difference in all honesty. It’s an easy excuse for the same cloggers that have been getting away with these performances for years. Tired of excuses now. Just not good enough performances.
Ya I agree. Some years back maybe. Goodison as bearpit a has lost that kick in recent years. There was as much of a lack of bite in the stands as there has been on the pitch over last 5 years. Performances have not been good enough to get us into europe and they wont be this year either with our home form.
