2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

The biggest issues for me are the right hand side and the midfield / tempo they set.

One issue I've noticed though is we seem to be stuck in a bit of a halfway house tactically with Richy/DCL - the former thrives being in the middle having those through balls put in to make those curving runs and slot like against RS/Saints whereas DCL is obviously more suited to the ball going out wide and the cross thrown in.

I think both work better with just being the one central and for me Carlo has to build the team/tactics around one of them.

I imagine he'll stick with DCL going forward but I do think we would (with the right additions in the summer) be a stronger side certainly counter attacking if we had Richy through the middle, two pacey wide players either side with James (and maybe someone like Rabiot) in behind pulling the strings.

See, I don't agree here.

Carlo's a great motivator - look what he's done with Dom, or in individual games like the derby.

It's not motivation, it seems to me to be a bit of attention to detail.

I really do think it comes from him managing so many elite players down the years. He's used to players, when they are playing teams that are on paper not as good as them, being able to go out and show their worth. Now, I'm sure he knows that it's an issue, he clearly does. But so far, he's not shown many signs of being able to arrest that form, which is an issue.

It's hugely frustrating. I don't think he got it badly wrong tonight - like he did in the games against Fulham and Newcastle (away). I just think it's another example of us not being good enough creatively, and that has been an issue in games we've won as well as lost.

That's all I'm wanting. Some structure and idea of how to attack without a key player. We can't be so reliant on James, because he can't play half of our games.
But desire and urgency are down to him, we look so lame, home and away, against top six and bottom six. Carlo is paid to get internationals like ours playing well

Urgency and desire are as much up to the players as the manager. The lack of urgency at the end is not coming from.the manager, its coming from the players who lacked desire to fight till the final whistle.

The lack of urgency and stuff like 40 yard backpasses also wouldn't happen with a crowd at GP. The crowd would have been going mental at the lack of forward passing in the last 10.minutes.

I'm not sure they are.

We don't press. We aren't a pressing team. It's crap, because we should be able to a bit, so again a bit of a worry, though do think it's a result of bad recruitment from Walsh and Brands in the past that we have so many one-paced players with no energy. Gomes can't press, Iwobi runs around like a headless chicken. Digne, as good as he is, isn't quick. We don't want Dom and Rich doing all their work defending. We rely massively on Doucoure which again shows up just how bad our recruitment has been in that area.

The main issue for me is how we attack, though.

Doucoure doesn't add loads on the ball, so missing him isn't an excuse. We just move the ball so slowly, and you can actually hear Carlo and the coaches asking them to quicken it up. That, again, comes down to the squad, but we should also have an attacking structure or system in place. A few tried and tested moves, that they know like muscle memory, that can be done by any player dropping into a certain bit of space and playing the ball in the right way.

That's basic level stuff. Sunday league stuff. That you can apply across the board. We don't seem to have that, because if we did, we'd score a lot more goals than we do, because our forwards are generally very good.

I'll be gutted if any of Holgate, Gomes, Davies, Iwobi or Sigurdsson start more than 5 games next season. Surely Carlo knows these are the priorities to get out the door as soon as possible in the summer, alongside of course Tosun and no doubt Kean.

Mate, the manager is responsible for player input, that’s their job
Dyche got his team of b rate players up fur the game more than Carlo did, same story all season

I blame the players because lots of them have been like this under several managers. They are unreliable and inconsistent.

If they can't get up for a match then they shouldn't be playing at this level. Our mentality at goodison this season has been a complete joke. Players have to take far more responsibility and I won't be giving them a free pass

Fair enough, however, if multiple international players are performing below par, then the blame comes from the top. Players need to want to play for the manager, if he is no instilling then belief then he is accountable.

The players do want to play for this manager but it doesn't look like they want it enough. Ashley Cole was spot on when he said they aren't willing to run enough.

Being consistently inconsistent and not being able to match or better the opposition physically is something we've struggled with for years now. It's getting quite boring.
