2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

The fact that anybody thinks Carlo is above criticism just because of who he is is hilarious. We all know his track record and we hope he can do a good job here, but currently he's not torn up any trees - but is at a disadvantage because he hasn't been able to forge his own squad yet.

I'll judge him properly this time next season. If he's been backed in the summer and we're not comfortably in the top six then he won't be performing any better than Martinez did but with much less investment.
Martinez finished 11th in his second and third season so that's not really true is it. Swings and roundabouts re less investment v bloated squad

If ancelotti has us anywhere near fighting for Europe come the end of the seasons to come it's an improvement - we've been more or less out of contention from the half way point in recent seasons. Obviously we want and expect more than that given his pedigree but it would still be an improvement.

His record with Everton:

Played 50
Won 25
Drawn 10
Lost 15 - 7 of these were last season when he took over the shambles that we were last season

A 50% win ratio after 50 games ain’t bad. During his time here he has been pragmatic with his tactics (I’ve seen people suggesting in here he has no plan B - considering the number of different systems we’ve played i don’t think that’s true)

We have played defensively quite often, which I think draws more attention to losses as being bad losses, hence the frustration. Whereas when we’ve played defensively and won I certainly wouldn’t label that as a ‘bad win’.

He’s also been hamstrung with the squad he’s inherited which has restricted what signings we can make. By the summer we will have a few players off the books as their contracts will be expiring and I’d imagine we’ll make a profit on Kean at PSG, so hopefully we can look forward to a string transfer window.

I am quite surprised at the way this thread has developed since Sunday. I was moved to criticise Carlo's team selection and subs, I think justifiably. It was not a knee-jerk, I was simply reacting to what I had seen. I did not go to any extremes, nor do I believe my comments demonstrate a pendulum mentality.

I am 67 years old and have been watching and supporting Everton since the mid 1960s. I have seen the highs and lows, good managers and bad managers. I have never suggested Carlo is a bad manager, but I think he ballsed it up on Sunday.

It seems to me that some of those defending him in the last few pages are the ones resorting to hyperbole and name-calling rather than the other way around.

You are 100% correct.

Love Carlo, he’s not invincible, neither is he above criticism, however, he took over a real car crash of a squad here and it won’t be cured overnight. To be in the position we are at the moment is, for me anyway, much better than I hoped for pre season. I think it is fair to say we are a work in progress. That being said he cocked up on Sunday, but I’m sure he had good reason to try to get away with the selection he made when taking into account the rigors of the Spurs game and the upcoming games against City and our lovely neighbours.

He took a gamble, it went wrong, shot happens. As I said he’s not invincible, but, he’s a lot better than most of his predecessors.

I always find that a bit odd of a statement from people because he brought in 4 or 5(Olsen) first team players in his second window, now technically 6 in three windows. He may not have his first choice 11 be entirely of who he wants in but he's brought in a LOT more players in one window than almost any other manager gets the benefit of being able to do.

How has he managed to fortuitously edge 50% of his games? Absolute mystery. Almost as if he knows what he’s doing.

I get you.

We are still allowed to discuss his shortcomings though.
We are still allowed to discuss how bad the performances have been.
We are still allowed to discuss how losing at hone to West Ham, Leeds, Newcastle and Fulham is a bit grim, especially with performances like we’ve seen.

People calling for his head need to get a grip of course. But this seems like a general swipe at anybody questioning anything at all, which is a load of bollocks if that is the case.
Telling people who don’t see things your way to STFU is all a bit RAWK behaviour tbh.

No I'm not saying have no opinion on anything he does. Not a general swipe at all. And to be honest I'm too lazy right now to extrapolate more on the part of my rant that was describing what was annoying me!

Go through the thread and tell me how many people have actually done that.

Don't think you will find many, it seems to be something thrown out there if you question the poor performances.

Honestly reading your last several posts in the thread and I would get the impression that you would be say a month without a win and without a decent performance and you'd be starting to talk about if he's the right choice. Apologies if I read you wrong but its how it comes out reading your posts as an example of what I was banging on about in my post

I could never blame him if we lost this one, and how unfortunate we are to play them when they have Laporte back as opposed to early in the year when Leicester whacked them.
