2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

We have lost a few games and performed bad. Jiminy Jillikers.

The outrage is daft.

I tend to reflect more on the fact he took over a regular bottom table side and we are now currently 7th and 5 points off champions league with a game on hand. In February. And he's great.
This type of thing doesn't help really. Calling a team that had finished no lower than 8th in the 3 full seasons before he took over, and finished in the bottom half twice in the last 15 years (both 11th) 'a regular bottom table side' is ridiculous. You're doing it to make it sound like Ancelotti is doing an amazing job in getting us to 7th, which just fuels people to come back saying no he isn't, which then gets you all righteously indignant again. He's doing Ok at the moment, there's still a chance that we can get back on track and finish in the top 6, in which case i'll be saying he's done a really good job. There's also still a chance that this form will continue and we'll finish in the bottom half again. I wouldn't really like to guess which one is more likely at the moment. Nobody wants him sacked, there's no need for people to get so precious about him getting a bit of stick for poor performances and results, it's normal.

Why wouldn't we beat Villa, especially away? We've beaten much better sides than them, and in truth sides like them and West Ham do tend to falter a bit at the back end.

Hopefully we do come strong again, I`d love to see nothing more, and these teams have their blip, our blip goes back about 9 or 10 games. The home form is a massive concern, I`m sure it has more to do with fans, a full Goodison would tell these players all they need to know about some of their performances.

When he wins a game he’s the best thing since sliced bread then he loses a game or two and the knives comes out.
Too many on here are all over the place, up, down up down.
Get a grip and judge the guy at the end of the season.
Then a few more tweaks in the summer and then judge him on a new level of expectation.
Problem is the expectations are too high too soon for many.
I’d love to see us win the league again one day and be a force like we were in the 80’s. I wouldn’t even rule that out in my head with Carlo at the helm but it won’t happen in the next year or two, in the same way we were never going to get top 4 this season.

It's no good doing it for 15 mins, then getting turned over is it? Also, I suspect the staying deep strategy is because he knows Keane and Mina turn like oil tankers and get done by pace. Long term Godfrey addresses that, but he's arguably not looked ready for CB this season and he's been needed at LB.

Agree though, it's not a satisfactory set up. Its got us so far, but I think the squad is st its ceiling.
15 min?

When it comes to pace, neither Dias, Stones nor Laporte are extremely fast players. There are many teams that do not necessarily have Usain Bolt in defense who have high pressure, or a more conservative variant. Few teams do it for 90 minutes, but do it in periods.

But the point is to follow certain clear guidelines. Already in children's football, you learn to step down when the player with the ball has no pressure on him. If the player is under pressure, then you can keep the line. If the opponent plays a support pass, then you can push up, etc. Eventually you learn more universal rules, and at senior level, the coach usually has some preferences of his own. But all this must be coordinated and practiced.

What has been the most prominent in the last decade in football, and has developed the most, is precisely the pressure game. Without this in place, you have no chance of being successful. However, we choose a variant that most teams have gone away from a long time ago, except for Mourinho, but in return they are good at counterattacks. Nevertheless, Mourinho's success has also been limited over the past decade. It is also difficult to imagine that Tottenham will be a serious competitor to the other top teams with this style.

I've been wondering for a long time what Ancelotti's plan is, but it's really quite obvious; Catenaccio. Then we just have to accept it, and hope it brings success.

We are still well in the hunt for top 4, win a few games in a row and we are back up there

We had a really bad run of form with him being a regular. I agree he improves the team but it's short sighted to think he turns everything around.

But more games with Allan-Doucoure-James-DCL-Richy all together will undoubtedly make a difference. We are not complaining that one player is out. but we have very rarely had our first choice XI and i dont hear one negative comment from Ancelotti about that. He's doing his best in difficult circumstances and we are definitely better in our mentality and better in certain play - it's definitely not a defence only team..All 4 signings improved the team, King may well do as well, and DCL, Keane, Davies, Mina have all improved.

So you are basically recognising we can't / don't do pressure football well or 'properly'?

Cool, it took you a long winded route, but I think we agree. Its a contain approach using the players we have. Nice one.

That's the problem mate, we win it's "Carlo magnifico" from those who won't have a word said against him. We get beat it's "he's finished" from those who can't wait to put the boot in. I just said it before, constructive criticism shouldn't be swatted away by those backing him, but those having a pop at him should refrain from going OTT for the slightest thing.

We're still in contention of europe.

If we can maintain that, with this squad, in the run in then fair play.

The truth is we're just not very good, especially if we lose one or two like Calvert-Lewin/Allan.

A while back Moshiri said being an Everton manager is a tough gig because Everton fans are 3 defeats from turning on a manager and it seems he was bang on.

Actually, it was two.

We’ve added 5 players since he took over, to a squad that was nowhere near good enough to compete at a decent level in the Premier League.

I can’t wait to see what he does with more of his signings, if he’s doing what he has with this bunch.
