Not being funny D. But Yankee is the term most Brits/Limeys refer to residents of the United States. Its not meant to be insulting. Its just the historical term we've grown up with applying to you.

Sure there are some affluent area's in that region, but there are massive sh*t-holes there too. Like the whole of New Jersey
I say yankees, to refer to Americans, sometimes. This is news to me that it's offensive though. I just use it in the same way I'd call British people Brits.
