Champions League revamp

These 6 clubs must be punished. This can't be airbrushed over.

It might not be fair on the players and fans of the 6 clubs, but not punishing them wouldn't be fair on the fans and players of the other 86 league clubs.

They must face the consequences of thier actions. And it must be done in a way that will make them think twice next time. Because if we do nothing, there will be a next time

How can we punish them?
uefa won't.
Fa won't

Let's just keep fighting for revamping the game.

Totally predictable, but all media outlets seem to immediately jumping back in bed with these now - clamouring for their clicks and future subscriptions.
Commence operation whitewash.

Is it going to work this time, though? They're falling back into conditioned reflexes. If they feed people a line of BS about what happened in a game, but most people didn't see it and those that did can rationalize the point of view of the line of BS as at least sustainable, that's one thing.

Here, everyone was paying close attention. Is the Big Lie strategy really going to work? Recent events are not exactly encouraging, but at the same time I daresay that these events were probably followed more closely than even COVID by those that followed them. (A sad commentary on our society, that.) I think it took a month in Current Affairs to run to the same number of pages on COVID that we did in a day on this.

Granted, this is a soccer forum, so some of that is just natural interest level, but it seems that just about every 'real' fan was paying attention to the point of distraction.

The real question, I suppose, is whether or not the supporters' groups can capitalize on these owners catalyzing accumulated resentment with their actions and sustain pressure for real reforms.

I'm absolutely not a lawyer and tax is my area, but it looks pretty vague to me in law. I don't think it's clear cut at all because a competition could be deemed to commence on the date binding contracts are signed. I don't think it would be when the first matches take place anyway, it would be long before that. It would be decided in a court if it got that far, but I don't think that's going to happen.

If they are punished (which I doubt tbh) then it is more likely to be for bringing the game into disrepute.
I am a lawyer ( albeit retired solicitor) but did not practice in competition / sports law.
However from my understanding of the issues and ( brief) reading of the rules I would suggest that there is no clear cut answer to whether their actions thus far put them in breach.
I suspect that they will be welcomed back and no punitive action will be taken but very much hope that I'm wrong.
I fear that this issue has just been kicked down the road for a season or two and that ESL Mk2 will emerge as slightly more palatable with increased possibilities of club access outside of the founder clubs.
That said however much you polish a turd it is still a turd.

Barnes pushing the PL 1992 comparison on Talksport

Anyone pushing that narrative quite frankly hasn't a clue. We spent the 90's trying to avoid relegation, so the closed shop PL argument is nonsensical.
It is such a poor argument. The premiere league was bad for football, we all know it. But that doesn't mean we should be allowed to keep doing it on repeat in a race to the bottom.

I don't know how you punish them though.

Fine the owners? They will just push it back onto the fans and they will suffer. they don't deserve that when it's them who have turned this around.

European ban? 3 of them likely won't even make the Champions League next year anyway plus UEFA aren't turning RS, Spurs, Arsenal away from the Europa League or Utd away from the ECL. UEFA are far too greedy.

Transfer ban? I'd imagine the rats lawyers would have a field day with that.

This whole thing is disgusting. That fit & proper ownership test before the buy a club needs a revamp.

The game is never going to get revamped in the way we want. There is too much money in it.

In how to punish them? At this stage I'm unsure as to what rules, if any, they have currently broken. If I was the Premier League and FA, I'd currently have my solicitors pouring over every text in the rule to try and get them on something.

We simply can't just ruffle their hair and say 'you cheeky little scamps, better luck next time'. Something needs to give.

That was my impression, although it's much more interesting coming from someone from the legal industry - thanks mate.

Steve Parish interview on the BBC this morning was good. Fines, points deductions are maybe deserved, but they are short term measures. We need to overhaul the power structure of football so this never happens again.

20 point deduction, £50m fine apiece.

Loads of ways to punish them. Loads of clubs have been punished far more severely for much less.
