Champions League revamp

This is the crap that City fans received last night before the game:

Dear Supporter,

I am writing to you regarding the events of the past few days.

I am sorry it has taken a little time, but the circumstances have been somewhat exceptional and it was important to me to contact you directly.

As you know, Manchester City has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.

As always, when we make choices and decisions, we do so with the best interests of the Club in mind and we believed that being part of such an initiative could give us a voice that might be imperative to our future ability to succeed and grow.

However, in making that choice we failed to remind ourselves of the unbreakable link between the passion of our fans and the right to have the opportunity to earn success. It is a truth that is fundamental to the DNA of Manchester City and the Board deeply regrets taking a decision that lost sight of the historic values of the Club. We made a mistake and we sincerely apologise to our fans for the disappointment, frustration and anguish caused by the last 72 hours.

I want to personally assure you that the Owners, Chairman, Board and staff are completely committed to ensuring that the club continues to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing well-being of both the English and European football pyramids and their associated competitions. We will embrace the opportunity to earn back the full trust of our stakeholders and the football family in general.

I thank you for taking the time to read this and I extend my thanks to you for your continued support.

I look forward to welcoming you back to the Etihad Stadium as soon as circumstances allow.

Yours sincerely

Ferran Soriano, CEO

Scab Club. Without the pyramid system YOU wanted to destroy, they would be non existent.

Scab. Scab. Scab.

Own it.

They’ve snapped back straight away to the kind of behaviour that made their owners think they’d accept a super league. ‘We’re better than you, you’re all jealous, bitter lot’ and then in the same breath ‘I’m just amazed our owners didn’t realise how much the fans value the football pyramid’. Hypocrites the lot of them. Nothing will change because of this. The scab six will just have even more preferential treatment from governing bodies and the media. Sky didn’t know who they were for 48 hours but have no reverted straight back to being LFC TV 24/7
They'll be 1000 times worse now to help make sure it doesn't happen again anytime soon.
A menu of Sky and scab six makeup sex for the foreseeable future.

It seems to me that money madness has warped everyone's view of the game. When Perez bleats that no-one can sign Haaland or Mbappe without giving the big Clubs more money you know that we are now living in some kind of alternative universe. What do these players do if no-one is willing to meet their demands? Some argue that punishment should be withheld because we need these clubs to survive, but that to me is just appeasement and acceptance of the status quo. Yes, there will be financial consequences for the rest of the leagues, but they are struggling to keep up with the current model anyway and there aren't enough billionaires in the world to fix it. The reason everyone is so excited, angry and engaged right now is the prospect of some consequences and maybe a reset of the overall structure. If no action is taken we might as well pack up now.

They'll try it again. Dead soon.

At least he was honest here - this is what his (and the 12’s, and ironically enough loads of these clubs fans) problem is, that many “smaller” clubs can compete now, that they’ve remembered that running a club properly and rationally off the pitch can help get success on it.

Being beaten by a team of free transfers and hone grown kids is like the medieval Catholic Church being shown up by some Bohemian priest, you know someone is going to end up on the pyre if it keeps happening because it’s such a threat to their existence.

It’s also why he was lying elsewhere in this interview when he said this wasn’t a threat to domestic leagues - thats who it was aimed at, clearly. They weren’t making money out of the CL (except when CL clubs bought players) anyway.

He’s basically saying it’s not fair that other clubs are running their clubs correctly and being able to compete. It goes against everything FIFA and UEFA themselves were saying over the last few days that they believe in ‘Competition’...

Absolutely, and of course in any vibrant league that will always happen with monetary imbalance - some clubs without money will come up with other ways than just money to survive, and for some clubs that will work well enough to allow them to think about doing things on the pitch too, like going for a CL place.

Hence this SL was aimed at taking away the motivation for small clubs to do those things; to make there be no pot of gold or glorious trophy to justify working towards.

That it would also have cut off a lot of the supply of players to the big clubs probably didn’t concern them a bit.

Words are hollow right now. I will never trust any of these 12 clubs again. They will be judged by their actions and it's very hard to trust them all not to try something like this again. They've shown their true colours and no one should be pandering to their hollow apologies.

Ha, my mate sent me that, it’s as sincere as the South Park “sorry” clip

And in today’s alternative world, Talksport were talking about bringing Celtic and rangers into the PL.
Seems that the “earn it” strap line had a shorter life span than the ESL itself.
Getting really bored of football now, enough to walk away.

I mean, he is wrong though. How many clubs in the Premier league are actually turning a profit and making money? 2018/19, 11 clubs made a loss. Spurs and Liverpool turned the most profit.

Let's not buy into it all. It is what it is. A power grab to make themselves more money and has nothing to do with any of the other clubs across the globe.

Maybe that's their ultimate plan of attack - cultivate apathy and long term disinterest with the (as they put it) legacy fans - fast forward two years and try again on a lesser scale with less resistance.
Job done - roll up future fans.

I'd quite like to see this, but only if it resulted in Scottish clubs all earning more money - being distributed into lower leagues (which would also have to be part of the radical reform)

Instead of this, why not scrap the Carabao Cup, make it the British Cup and dip toes into the water with the idea? Similar format just including scottish league teams, will inevitably have Celtic/Rangers vs PL teams and would be a good - non damaging = spectable.
