Heard good things about Krakow, very cheap by the looks of it too

Krakow is good I stayed in the old Jewish quarter called Kazimierz which is full of good bars and restaurants and less busy / touristy than the city centre but it is not far from the centre as well so best of both worlds

Or do you prefer just to get somewhere and 'explore' the city without any planning?

Some cities, its essential you plan and book in advance. Or at least get your missus to do it like me

For eg, Auschwitz-Birkenau tour while in Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau is an interesting and sobering visit but need to bear in mind that it is a full day to visit

Looking at going during the first week of August (though no doubt the flights will be cancelled by then...).

Went to Bilbao in March. It was fabulous. Definitely recommend it.

Yeah good shout that. Been looking at quite a few places, Krakow's one city because flights and hotel for a few nights is so cheap. Did wonder whether to be in the Old Town or just out of it. Just seen Kazimierz is only a 15/20 min walk to the centre which is ideal!

yeah, Porto is great, still has a bit of the 'old fashioned' charm which is a bit more lost in Lisbon now..

my only issue is it is the more traditional food is a bit carb heavy, although i did have a lot of francesinhas so it clearly didn't bother me that much lol

They’re so proud of their francesinhas. It’s the kind of meal I would make as a student when I had the munchies. A couple of my work mates get visibly rattled when I tell them Portuguese food isn’t that great and the custard tarts are average.

The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most amazing buildings I have ever seen. Agree about the Old Town. Great place and loved the whole vibe of the place.

San Sebastián during the Semana Grande festival (13th to 20th August). Great food, wonderful beach and a week long outdoor party. David Moyes didn't enjoy it much but that should serve as a recommendation.
