Did a lengthy session on Nordschleife the other day and managed to put in the 5th quickest time in the world (with no draft) in the MX-5, not a perfect lap but trying to get a perfect lap on a track which has 157 corners is pretty hard and can get tedious when each lap takes 8 minutes to complete...

Im too old for all that and not really into streaming culture tbh
i can compete with just about anyone in the MX-5 and a few other cars but there are lots of cars/series that the player base is spread out over. Put me in a high end open wheel car and id be at least a second off the fastest guys even after lots of practice.
Does your driving gaming skill translate into driving in real life? Always wondered that with these games.

In my case it’s hard to say as I can’t afford to get into local club racing and even track days are expensive as hell when you factor in tyre costs etc. Its hard to judge real life pace when you've got no benchmark to compare yourself with.
Generally speaking though I’d say the very top guys in sim racing are more than capable (in terms of skill) of making it as real life racing drivers provided they are physically in shape. I used to race against (and lose to) this kid on iracing a few years back and he beat a real life f1 driver and an Indycar champion at ROC a year ago having only driven real race cars a couple of times before.
Also if you look at real life drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris they are just as quick in sim as in real life, so there is definitely an overlap between real life and sim.

I think sony had the GT academy for a few years. I thinl the best online players where selected and trained by (maybe) Nissan to be pro race drivers.
I seem to remember some were quite competitive but the program was binned off.

Wolfgang Reip who I know from iracing years back won GT Academy in 2013 or 2014 and went on to drive for Nissan in WEC although im not sure he’s racing full time anymore.
Jan Mardenborough who won it the year before Wolfgang has gone on to have a professional career as well and is still racing in Super GT.

All this is making me want to pick up GT Sport again. The enthusiasm will die immediately as I’m punted in to turn 1 at Monza.
Some awful driving in GT sport. The Championship races are marginally 'safer' than the dailies, but still capable of causing a bit of internal rage.
I’ve been enjoying it, it does seem a bit easier than the more recent entries though would be the only caveat
