Computer games.

I've joined a few stock alert pages and Scan had 3080s earlier this month on two occasions I believe.

I don't need the 3080, but it's significantly more powerful than the 3070 and I think i'd notice the difference playing heavily modded DayZ servers in 1440p. FPS can drop to around 50 in heavily populated places. Now I've had a taste of 140fps I've found myself turning my nose up at anything less than 100.

Fair, I suppose if you have the spare cash lying around then why not!

Upgrading your RAM could be a good shout too. I have 16gb which is good enough to see through all games atm, but seen some recent releases (Icarus) and upcoming (new Chernobyl game) recommending 32gb which is crazy!

Yeah the new Stalker game has crazy requirements. I'm quite intrigued by it.

Apparently it's fairly safe to buy RAM on Ebay etc. I can double mine to 32gb for about £30 as my RAM sticks are very common. For that cost I may as well.

You are about to get shafted. Nvidia are rereleasing the 3080 today. Just now with 12GB vram. This is their "MSRP reset" product for the 3080.

I’ve seen that and it’ll be priced at around £1600! The standard 3080 MSRP is around £650 or £700 for an FE which is the only ones I’ll consider. Finding one will be tough at best.

I had a look on eBay yesterday and the exact model of my 3070 is going for £900+. It’s madness.

Do you have a paid for bot?

Then you ain't getting a GPU at MSRP online. Other than that, you only real chance would be to walk into a physical retailer, that happens to selling at MSRP (which few, if any, are). And unless you are buying multiple GPUs, the bots don't make sense as the cost puts the price right back up to inflated/scalper pricing.

It's grim in the GPU market right now. With no signs of it getting better

I feel even more determined now. I currently have a lot of time on my hands so as soon as one of these alerts comes in I’ll stop whatever I’m doing. There was a flurry of deals on Monday I could have chosen for but they were all for 3080ti, 3090s or in Europe.

I admire your tenacity, but the FE cards aren't LHR (asking with a bunch of early models) and thus are in super high demand for crypto miners. I would imagine the only FE cards you can get will be via second hand markets.

You will have to go for an AIB partner, and showing up in person to a store is probably the best way to get one (though even retailers are severely marking up gpu's now..... Afraid of missing out on that sweet sweet profit the scalpers were making)

Is there any hope of GPUs and CPUs going back to semi normal pricing in the next few years or is insanely overpriced technology the inevitable future ? Crypto isn't going away and I've heard nothing about when this global chip crisis is predicted to end.

In normal times I would have upgraded my PC ages ago but my current graphics card sells for almost as much as I bought it brand new 6 or so years ago. Its the absolute worst time to get into PC gaming or look to upgrade but ive been saying that for what feels like 2 years now.

If consoles had the same games as PC id probably switch over as they seem infinitely better value.

I've added another stock alert page to my war chest. There was a drop at 9am today in Germany which went in 90 seconds.

I'm trying to buy RAM sticks and apparently they had to have been made by the same bloke, on the same day, in the exact same spot in the factory otherwise they're not compatible and can cause issues. So now I'm scrolling through hundreds of identical eBay ads squinting at a tiny bit of writing printed on the back of an item about the size of a credit card trying to match them up to mine like some sort of desperate lottery ticket check.

It's probably easier to sell my two and buy another four at the same time so I know they're the same.

Bruh, you dont need more RAM and you dont need a new Graphics card.

Stop wasting money.

It’s become a bit of an obsession now thinking about potential upgrade paths and how I can make my gaming experience even better.

I want to get a full surround sound system eventually.
It's one hobby that can be very expensive if you insist on having all brand new stuff all the time. Most games don't even need any where near as much power as you already have. Although the new windows 11 is supposed to be a RAM eater.
