Computer games.

I have no idea what FOSS is.
Free and Open Source Software - basically Linux/Android.
Got out at the iPhone 6. Samsung watch, Galaxy s21, PC, Laptop, fire tablet. No issues and sideloads aots.
Same crap, different brand. I went through several Galaxies (S, A series) and the Gear watch - honestly iPhone/iWatch is just better as far as ease of use goes.

Never needed to sideload a single thing in my life also as I use my phone mostly for authenticators and as a phone (call, chat, etc.) so it makes sense to me.

Wtaf. Who makes phone calls in 2024? I have spoken to one person this year that wasn't a business.
Also my sideloadling is generally for customisation as I like my shizz snazzy.

Sadly I do tbh, even though it's mostly via Teams and not an actual call nowadays. Actually using the phone is either to my parents/grandparents or when receiving food deliveries lol

Arsed about the customisation personally, but more power to you - I can see how it's fun and all, just cba for a mobile device anymore, I just want things to work, not to fidget with everything half the time so it's set up properly and then not updating as it will ruin my apps and then it updates as I missed cancelling it and, oh bother, half my phone's broken. Yes this is experience talking lol

Baldurs gate 3...so I'm still enjoying it, but I'm not sure how much my 'skill' as a player really matters that much, just having enough life potions etc and you win a fight, it does seem to be more of an interactive film
What level are you playing it at? I did first run on balanced and thought it was a nice difficulty - was a total noob though, and even then it was getting straightforward by the end.

Now on tactician and have some actual good builds and equipment and yeah it is generally easy, but the big fights still feel hard. Like if you just played thoughtlessly with no regard for tactics and matchups you would get spanked.

Potions of speed / haste are the biggest game-breakers istm. Given how the economy of the turn-based combat is everything.

4 I think, am just doing moon lantern, just not convinced my decisions are that important

I'm a bit confused, literally every decision you take can change things drastically. The fights aren't really "the point" - it's all about how you get through the plot. How you choose to work things out.

There's huge areas of the game that you can not bother with that others will think was the best part of the game, dozens of characters you might never see, you can kill innocents, sleep with devils or side with the angels.

Decisions being important is the entire point of the game.

Not sure if this is the right place, but my eldest lad (11) wants a Gaming PC. He wants the likes of steam and to be able to play some fairly standard games. How deep do I have to go? Is it a good idea to build one with him? How much is too much? What's overkill?

Maybe I don't realise the decisions I'm making are affecting things then lol

I'd say you can build one with him, it's a fairly standardised process nowadays and you can prepare/check things out via youtube for things you're not sure. Especially good if he's into tech really.

If you don't want to or don't trust yourself - @Baines' left foot recommended a PC build shop a while back that can build one for you.

As far as 'overkill' or not - if you get a bit better PC it's not wasted, it will just last longer. Depends what you think of as fairly standard games, but anything with 24-32GB RAM, current generation i5/i7 or Ryzen 7, and a GPU with 8GB or more VRAM will run pretty much anything in the mainstream of games for a while ahead, maybe just swapping GPUs along the way really.
