Sounds like your gaming brain has been ruined by COD

Top quality rpgs but I guess that genre isn't for everyone

I don't play COD.

2 hours in and I've barely done anything, it's just been an endless stream of relentlessly dull/tedious conversations that go on for far longer than they need to. Everything feels comically dragged out and the conversations don't feel natural. The two main characters are both very bland as well.

The environment is nice thanks to Cryengine but it would be nice to actually do something other than watch cut scenes, I've had control of the character for about 10 minutes of those 2 hours lol.

Read the same thing from somebody else who played it.

Picked it up myself yesterday.
I played the original to death and loved it even with all its jank.

This one is very front heavy on the tutorials and they aren’t very fun to play through. The black-smithing in particular gets tedious very quickly.

I like the games slower pace in general, but it takes a good 2 hours to get to a point where it plonks you into the open world proper, which I imagine will put a lot of people off from the get go, like in your case. The first one was the same mind you.

It’s great once it lets you off the leash though. Starting back with literally nothing and having to work your way back up is where the real enjoyment is at in these games. Yeah it’s fun hacking your way through hordes in your shiny armour and big sword, but there’s something to be said about those combat encounters where you have to fight off bandits and highway-men with just the half ruined gear you’ve looted from corpses

I can understand that. You either get immersed in these types of games, or it comes across very boring and dull. Everything I've seen from the game so far is the characters are grounded which is fine with me, but I know most like the larger than life characters with a lot of personality. It isn't for everyone that is for sure.

Avowed is getting 80% average reviews on Metacritic. MIght check it out once it's out as I'm after a new RPG to play.
I am going to wait on that one. It looks interesting. RTS/CRPG combat in first person, but man. Why are these gaming companies hiring people like Matt Hansen? It's the same problem that Andromeda had where they hire these openly racist people that basically hire inexperienced staff and the product is greatly affected. It's not even about DEI or politics. These guys openly admit they want to ruin games. I was always a fan of Obsidian, but I am skeptical about them atm. I hope it's good. I loved Pillars to death.

My thoughts on watching the gameplay; it starts off very slow combat wise in the beginning and you might be a little put off. Once you get abilities or get a build going it looks kind of sick and very unique. Think Pillars DAO in first person that is a bit more fast paced. There looks to be boss battles. Not sure I have seen anything like it combat wise so it definitely looks original.
