He's come through Ajax. I expect his technique to be spot on having captained the club too. He'll have that. However, the big question was/is pace. It's absolutely everything in this league and if you don't have it your technical ability won't count for too much.

Apparently pace does not matter it is all about football intelligence. That's what I keep being told when questioning the wisdom of adding Siggurdson and Giroud to our already talented but one paced team

So true. Tall powerful, athletic players seemed to be favoured over players with technical ability in the premier league. I wonder how the likes of platini in his prime, would fare in the modern premier league.

No the even seen the game but he looks fantastic/off the pace/a target for nonces online* to terror him in a preseason game.

Depends mate, pace without a brain and you have no chance of reaching the top and the league is littered with 'athletes' that bounce around club after club without ever doing owt.

Players with a great footballing brain in general have better longevity and make it at a better level

a team needs a bit of pace in it - no arguments, but not every player in the team needs pace if that makes sense

Frank Lampard

want me to go on Dave?
Ozil, Mata, Lampard, Scholes. They all have short bursts of acceleration that allows for an important opening of space to get away from danger or allows them to release the ball without being closed down. And as @kenada_blue suggests the ability to be a couple of moves ahead of the play separates such players.

None of them did really though have what you described, that is basically acceleration which they didn't posses mate, what they did have was exceptional technique which meant very often either their first touch took them away from players and created that space or a change of direction coupled with their technique did likewise.

VERY VERY different to pace mate, it's technique and speed of thought/action. We won't know if Klassen has that until he settles into the team and we see a lot more of him really.

Easy example of such is Schneiderlin, he has an ability to create space when there isn't any, because of his technique and 'brain' for want of a better word

He'd have been ok. He was a genius.

Anyone short of that without pace will struggle here.

What we don't want on our hands is a Dutch Barry Ferguson.

Laughing at most of that. Lampard didn't have pace? Enough of it to race into the box to get a chance that'd popped up, or to carry the ball 15 metres or so and get a shot off. And Ozil? Mate, I watched him in the Bundesliga trailing a whole team in his wake arcing past them on wide runs that brought him into the box.

They don't have to be Raheem Sterling quick to do what they need to do.

Klaassen is one we need to be patient with. But as it stands people on here have the perfect right to question his pace and decision making as it stands.

Agreed. For me if we play a 4-3-3 where one of your 3 midfielders is an attacking midfielder you ideally want 3 but need a minimum of 2 of your 4 offensive minded player to be quick.

If you look at the players we have and the players we are being strongly linked with I am seeing very little speed outside of Sandro. I acknowledge that we do have some rapid squad players.
