Roberto Martinez admits the key to Conor McAleny's first-team hopes at Everton will be keeping the young forward away from the treatment room. mcAleny stole the show during a second-half cameo appearance to help the Blues begin their pre-season programme with a 4-0 friendly win at League One side Swindon Town .

The 22-year-old had a hand in two goals for Kevin Mirallas and one for Romelu Lukaku before completing the scoring in the final minute with a well-struck shot. McAleny made two substitute appearances for the senior side as a 19-year-old but has since been hampered by a succession of injuries, including twice suffering a broken leg.

And Martinez said: “It is very, very important for Conor to get the pre-season work injury-free. “Sometimes you have situations where you pick up little niggles and injuries and that was frustrating for everyone, not just Conor last season. “Now, he has had a very good run of work. “We hope he can stay fit because he has got really good low balance. He can turn, and technically he is very strong. “You could see today he has quality finishing on him. So let's hope he can push on and make sure he stays injury free for the rest of pre-season.”

it was really great to see him get his chance in the first team and he was a major influence on the teams improvement in the second half today. He used the ball so well and showed a lot of intelligence in his movement throughout the second half.

Let's not get carried away here, it was only Swindon.

I fully expect him to be the PL's top goalscorer now, but world player of the year? A step too far.
Rumour has it that his name is as good as already on next season's ballon d'or. No wonder Spurs are entering the bidding war for him...no show without Punch eh

Raised expectations. A real missing ingredient, great-white-hope type in the mould of last season's Garbutt if Martinez does the right thing and doesn't play him much. Otherwise, could be a real dark horse for Scapegoat of the Season if he can nail down a first team place.
Excellent post articulately describing the schizophrenic qualities inherent in your typical Everton supporter.

Always liked his hair. [Poor language removed] taste in music but whatever
