Massive head to head between MvdP and WvA at the world champs today - fast non technical course meant they couldn't be split and it went down to the final straight. vdP absolutely blew it up from the jump and now has five cyclocross world championships.
Wout was clearly the stronger man over Christmas but maybe slipped a tiny amount since, thought vdP looked sharper all race.

Course was honestly not great over the weekend for the other races where there was clearly a stronger rider (Zoe Backstedt got silver in the U23 today, with Shirin van Anrooj the clear winner), but thought it was great for these two - extremely suspenseful racing as one error and it's over.

At a somewhat lower level I did the last cross race of our season today - took most of last year off from training to straighten out a few things, and thought I'd just do a few crosses to get back into it. It's too awesome to just dabble with, though, so ended up doing most of the events.

First 100k yesterday but it’s been a very slow year so far. 470k so far is not what I wanted. The weeks of minus temperatures and fears of ice have set me well back.

Off to Mallorca again in April so need to get on it.
Even the hardest roadmen park it up when there's ice about - always the right decision on tarmac. You go down in an instant and can easily do a wrist or a collarbone. Off road is usually OK in winter conditions if you pick your route, you can see the ice and it's usually broken up - can do some great rides on the MTB or cross bike.

Prob just a couple more weeks of brass monkey weather left now.

That’s why I didn’t risk it. Colder again this weekend. Never ending!

Classics season begins tomorrow with Omloop - good preview here:

KBK day after

Great win for Tiejs Benoot today at KBK - he had a horror training crash last year so nice to see him back in the mix.

Wouldn't have been many peoples' pick from the lead group but he went long and no one reacted. Two TJV riders on the premises was a strong position - the others were maybe hesitant to chase him down as they'd lead out van Hooydonck.

Another Rabobank win having done another Geweiss three-man attack. U-huh.
