Danny Murphy - Brainless?

Murphy's a tit, but the reaction on here to what he said about the bloke on crutches is massively out of proportion.

Perhaps, Wool, but it’s the principle.

On the prejudice scale, it’s no doubt at the lower end, but prejudice is prejudice and the Beeb are supposed to be dead set against it in any if it’s forms or guises.

And this was the gist of my argument: a paid BBC employee should not be abusing his role on live TV to pedal or perpetuate these negative stereotypes and in stark defiance of its fundamental principles.

You either tolerate prejudice, or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways.

All fair enough but...

If Murphy/the BBC came out and issued an apology, something along the lines of “the BBC don’t tolerate this sort of comment and would like to apologise” or “I’m very sorry for the comment I made. It was an off the cuff remark and I now realize it was in bad taste and not suitable in the current climate” what do you honestly think would happen?

There would be a media/social media sh1tstorm, the story would escalate and it would probably result in another review of practices of the BBC and/or Murphy being sacked. the very best thing for him/them, to do now is keep quiet and wait for it to blow over.

It’s stories like this that make me worry about the new social media age. I think it’s great for certain things. It allows major stories not to be swept under the rug and the truth to come out (in most cases). However, at the same time it is often used for people with an agenda to spew out verbal abuse and try to get other people in trouble for their own amusement. It’s far too easy to just bang out a tweet these days and often it has a mob mentality to it.

Imagine if Peter Reid had said that instead of Murphy. Not saying he necessarily would, but nobody else on the panel seemed to have a problem with it and they all seemed to find what he said quite funny. Would you/a lot of evertonians be calling for Reid to be sacked? Probably not. Everton fans would be saying things like “Reid’s a good blue and he was just having a laugh. Possibly in bad taste but he’ll learn from it and move on”. While the reds would probably being organizing protests and signing online petitions. At the end of the day it comes down to who you support and who you don’t like.

I actually think Murphy is a pretty bad pundit and has an over-inflated opinion of how good he was as a player. He was decent but I have a feeling he thinks he was absolutely amazing, which he definitely wasn’t. He also looks like a goblin from a fantasy film and dresses like a substitute geography teacher. All in all, not a great look.

Rather two faced when the same people are lauging at what Moshiri said.

What Murphy said was pretty inconsequential. What Mosh said was pretty daft, but @Viennablue's spot on with

To be honest, it just gets tedious after a while.

Great response VB, but just because it might cause some head scratching for Aunty and perhaps an unfavourable outcome for the individual himself, doesn’t mean that action shouldn’t be taken, otherwise the matter is dodged and ‘swept under the carpet’.

As I’ve stated before, and I’m not back pedalling here, I was prepared for Murphy to be forced to make an apology and perhaps a warning issued as to the consequences of a future recurrence, as would be the norm for any organisation or employer of the Beeb’s standing. Imagine say a Council Official or a Police Officer making a similar disparaging remark about a member of a particular community. Quite rightly there would be an uproar and remedial steps taken against the individual as they’ve all benefitted from diversification and therefore cannot plead ignorance: as have ALL BBC employees. In the eyes of their employer, therefore, they have no excuse and are left to face the consequences as an individual.

Whether you consider it a case of a sledgehammer to smash a nut is irrelevant: prejudice is prejudice; an employee displaying such conduct whilst acting in their official capacity is in breach of the rules governing their terms of employment. Thus there are consequences to face and employers are duty bound to act.

Agendas, malevolent or otherwise, don’t enter into it.

Reidy is from the city, you can make fun of your own.

Murphy is a sneering simpleton from Crewe and should be treated with distain by everyone.

I'd like him sacked, not even arsed what for.
I was hoping it would be for confessing that he sexually molesters dead horses but if it's for this then that will do me fine.
