Cracking player when fit, just such a wasted talent. he’s exactly the kind of player would love to see in that barry/mcarthy role obviously next to (or just in front) of one of those 2, always looking forward, fantastic vision on the ball, when he’s on the pitch we really do step up a class. the only thing is it only happens couple times a season

see personally i just want him to stay fit for us for a season or two and make himself avaliable. i mean martinez hasn't hesitated to throw him back involved it seems now he is fit again so clearly the manager does rate him. the team has benefitted from him being in it before so theres all the proof we need about what he can do for the team. He just needs to stay fit! one more bad injury and that has to be it.

Nice to see him get some game time..

IF (big IF) he can stay fit and sober then I think he could actually make an important contribution this season, and that is a bonus that I don't think any of us were expecting at the start of the season.

Having as many players fit as for as long as possible is so important for a squad like us who can't just go out and buy big money reinforcements in Jan.

I think Martinez summed it up best when he said "we have a lot of good players in the squad, but we don't have another Darron Gibson".

Watching that Spurs highlights back was a joy. That was when Gibson was very fit could cover the pitch etc. He ran the midfield and you can see from those clips would fit in perfect to a Martinez side. He always wants the ball and wants to pass the ball to another Everton player. This wasn't a one off either, this was how he performed week in week out. I remember one home game against Southampton where he was outstanding.

The difficulty Gibson had was he was overplayed as we had a lack of options. We are fortunate now where we don't have to do that. I know a lot of people are slating Barry and unfortunately the debate are Gibson has become very much a Barry V Gibson debate. They both offer different things. I don't think we can under estimate what Barry does for the team as well.

Longer term though, having a fully fit Gibson will only serve us well. He is still only 27 and if he can get fit has a lot of miles in those legs still. We are fortunate to have Barry/Barkley/Gibson/McCarthy/Besic all fighting for 3 positions. Each of them offers something different and unique.

apparently martinez has been secretly switching his beer to non-alcoholic, clever mangement imo...gibson is still happy but not a big fat mess

If u compare him and Gareth Barry, Barry ticks all the boxes on and off the field, and yet he'll never possess that raw quality that Gibson will provide despite all his off field issues. Picking between the two depends on what type of personality you've got, "safe and steady" vs "dangerous but exciting"!

I think comparing Gibson & Barry is interesting, because it shows you the difference that off-field professionalism can have on your career.

People talk about injuries and inconsistency as if some players are just unlucky to be injured all the time, or that their bodies are not cut out to be a PL level footballer, but the truth is that much of it is to do with how you conduct your life away from the pitch. Eating right, getting enough sleep, playing attention to recovery, and doing the mundane stuff in training like taking time to warm up and warm down properly... all of that makes a MASSIVE difference in the long term.

No injury happens through bad luck

Unless u count being on the end of a dangerous tackle as bad luck

Muscle tears, tendon injuries etc all come from any of poor planning/training, overload, fatigue, low quality tissue, mobility issues

I don't like people reading 'celebrity juice' magazines. I don't like when sky sports do indept reporting on the personal life of people that isn't sport and I don't like people on here taking issue with Gibbons problems in his life when it comes to being a Toffee. What he does on the pitch should be our concern. Sure talk about it if need to but it should not interfere with your opinion on him as an Everton player.

Yeah but a player who gets on the piss and smokes is less likely to stay injury free and recover as quickly as one who leads a professional lifestyle and healthy diet, all other circumstances being the same

Tbf to him his last few injuries havent been muscle ones have they, been bone which is more bad luck

Quick question: Do people want us to extend him after this year?

My impression is you will never see a fully fit Gibson, and while there is no argument about his talent and he has abilities that no one else in our side does, my feeling with Barry, McCarthy, Besic, Cleverly and Ledson coming up I think we have enough cover in the midfield and his wages would be better spent elsewhere.

It is a shame, because his first few years he was fantastic for us and really elevated our play but his production for a full season will not match up with his ability.

I agree, largely. Obviously there are tackle-related injuries, but nearly all stuff such as muscle pulls, strain, stress fractures etc happen because you don't have the functional strength and low-level fitness to support the volume of intensity that you're asking your body to do, and/or you need to work on balance and mobility.
