Each to their own mate... I'm not here to validate other people, just as they are not here to validate me.

I'm more concerned with the footballing aspects of the deal anyways - I don't think this will turn out to be a wise move on the pitch, as I don't think we'll see him on the pitch enough to warrant the contract. But I'll be happy if I'm wrong.

I'm happy for them to take a chance on him rather than bring in an overpriced bench warmer, I suppose time will tell.

I'm not being unfair Mikey.

You said he couldn't pass the ball forwards mate

That's outrageously unfair

You're making him out to be crap when he really isn't

He's not especially GOOD or anything, but he's a solid choice in the middle of the park and is definately Premier League level when he remains fit (But he's never fit, which is why I wouldn't have renewed him)

Spade a spade at the end of the day

Jokes aside they've obviously decided he's been passed fit enough to be a squad option or can be sold for a small fee. Fine with me.

If you actually stop to think about this logically its actually makes perfect sense.

We have Besic, Barry, Jimmy Mac and Ross who can play there. Barry is coming to the end of his career and may or may not be up to 38+games a year. Besic is injury prone and inconsistent, Jimmy Mac has had his injuries and fatiuqe. Ross's powers can be used elsewhere.

Davies, Ledson, Walsh we suspect will all develop into starters for the first team but are prob of playing a full season next year.

So why sign a big money player for a central midfield slot and stop a pathway for the rich talent we have coming through there. Makes perfect sense to me to keep someone who knows the set up and run of the place and still has a bit in the tank as an insurance.

Actually makes perfect sense and encourages me about the clubs/managers emphasis on youth.
I do think that all of the players you mentioned above are different in their own way to Gibson.
Gibson controls a game, he sits in midfield giving good cover to the back four and can control a game as well as having a great range of passing.

The downside to Gibson is his injury record and can't be ignored. However, in the season just gone he was available for most of the season , just not used by the manager.

I think you need judge our ambitions at the end of the summer not the beginning.

If fit he's a useful, sometimes more than useful, squad member.
my theory is he was offered a new deal by martinez before he was sacked and the club felt that they had to honour it

I should say as well that imo this is 100% the new managers decision . In fact Koeman and Gibson would be quite similar in the way they play the game.... or at least when Koeman was playing the game.

Decent theory mate, but to be honest I don't think Martinez had any authority towards the end of his time at Everton to make such promises.

ah fair point , it is a surprise though he did get a new deal. i suppose we need to retain some players that are coming out of contract and gibson would have been the one to keep out of all of them
