Here's a few reasons to keep him.

I think he was fit for pretty much most of last season.
He counts as a home grown player.
He's only 28.
Makes business sense to have him on a contract and sell on if it doesn't work out than let him go for free and pay a premium for a home grown squad filler.
Any player who isn't coming close to retirement deserves a chance under the new management.
Having Gibson at the club could be another reason for Rooney to switch from united.
He was Evertons best player when Koeman last saw us a few months ago.
He has experience of winning the premier league.

Here's a few reasons to let him go.
Poor fitness.
Poor off field behavior

I think it make sense to keep him, at least till Koeman has had a chance to assess him properly.

  • He says he was fit, but he is hardly going to say otherwise is he? Who's going to challenge him on that, they've all been sacked.
  • He might only be 28 but he's been here for over 4 years and not exactly lit the world on fire playing 10 games a season.
  • No guarantee we will be able to sell him, I reckon if he could have gotten better wages than we offered he'd have gone and not re-signed.
  • Does he deserve a chance under new management based on how he has been for the last 3 years of constant injuries?
  • I really hope we haven't signed Gibson because he's mates with Rooney, as if it would make a difference anyway.
  • He was the best player in one of the few matches he played last year which just so happened to be in front of the new manager and so one match is enough to award a 2 year contract?
  • Winning the premier league... He wasn't exactly a stand out player he started for them only 6 times that season and came on as a sub 6 more.

He's not though, so that's not the scenario we're dealing with.

I get that it's different, in that he knows the club, we know he's actually quite good when he's fit etc but still...he's a never fit drunken menace to cyclists. He should have gone.

1 - Interested to know how you think DG could influence Rooney to return ?
2 - That was over five years ago, when he was a slightly better than average footballer in a very good team. The Premiership has moved on considerably from those days and he hasn't, in real terms he has gone backwards.
3 - not a ball-winning tackler, a trait widely thought to be beneficial in a midfielder.
4 - no pace about him whatsoever, another trait useful in a midfielder. He could get away with that as a squad player at Manure over five years ago - not in the Premiership of today.
5 - Not very good in the air.
6 - Despite having a reasonable shot, doesn't get forward enough to put it to good effect and that's probably because he knows in himself that he hasn't got the pace to recover ground if/when the opposition break quickly.

He simply isn't good enough in my opinion to warrant this contract extension.

That said, I hope for his and our sake that he has got himself fit, stays fit and if/when he plays, he somehow raises his level of application and performance to heights never yet reached by him.

It's not like we're arguing over buying the fella for five million quid. He's already an Everton player and one who has clearly proven to people more knowledgable than me or you that he deserves a contract extension.

Well done Darren. You've played a blinder to get a new contract. Stats thanks to EFC Statto.

Is he in the Irish squad? You could see Koeman having a "renew all current internationals" policy. If he is involved. McGeady next!

For me, it's a question of discipline. Don't want pissheads in or near the squad. The man has averaged 15 games a season for 12 years FFS!

I would definitely have sacked him when he knocked that cyclist over, while drunk driving. Sooner we get rid, the better.
Not defending Gibson on that he was totally wrong.
But, if Premiership clubs were to apply the highest moral standards to their players they wouldn't have a team never mind a squad.

I'd rather his role as a "squad player" was filled by Tom davies or ledson
Hopefully Ledson and Davies will get game time during the season, but I think it is too much pressure on young shoulders that they are expected to fill the squad.
There is no reason why the manager can't pick them ahead of any player if their form is good enough, but what do you do if they are struggling.
