David Moyes - Taking a knife to a gunfight at West Ham, Part 2

From the interwebz:

From those two seasons (at United and S'land), Moyes record reads; won 1, drawn 5, lost 16. Unfortunately, during his Everton days things weren’t much better for the 54-year-old.

For much of his stint at Goodison Park the so-called top four were generally Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United. Moyes’ record against those teams during his 11 years with the Toffees was; lost 27, drawn 16, won 0.

lol

Best chance we had to do any of them during his spell was the 2-2 against Arsenal where Pienaar chipped it over the GK, and we conceded in 90th minute.

That first win at Spurs with Andy Johnson, was pretty special.
He works teams hard Moyes, and when he gets it right, makes them hard to beat. In a season where literally anything can happen, he's taking his opportunity, it must be said!

Moyes works best at clubs where the backs up against the wall, moneys a bit tight, there is a bit of a chip on the shoulder etc. Hes very good at that, in many ways one of the best in the business.

The issue is, can he do much beyond that? That's where his weakness comes in, going to the next level. But that shouldn't detract from his strengths.

Hes got a German name, or has a silly phrase like gegen press to describe his play though, so he will probably be overlooked as a manager compared to say Hassanhuttl.

I wouldn't describe Moyes tactics as gegenpressing (counterpressing), that's Jurgen Klopps style.

Moyes's style is to soak up the pressure if anything, pressing in modern times starts from the front which he rarely seems to want from his players.

We certainly don’t gegenpress but the likes of Benrahma, Bowen, Formals and Antonio get through a lot of work pressing from the front. (Lingard too last night)

And for us it's Doucure, Sigurdsson, Iwobi, Richarlison, DCL from the front, Alan and Gomez from our own half.

It's not like we exclusively sit back and watch the game a-la Burnley (most the time).

moyes team have 2 very winnable games comming up as well for them if there is such a thing this season, away Fulham, then home sheff utd with man utd cup game inbetween

Which was pretty similar to all other teams at the time. No one was beating them away from home other than the other top 4 teams
Yes and no - most teams at least gave it a go. Most lost vs United (I went back a bit, but cba checking every single team mate, sorry. At least not now), but the mighty Blackburn beat them at home by having an actual go, for example, in a season they had no chance of survival and finished 19th. It's not impossible, but, despite having actual ambitions, we were plenty happy to just sit back and try f*** all all game and wait to get beat, literally a knife to a gunfight. Even in the FA Cup Final, after scoring he quickest finals goal and having them a bit rattled - we were happy to sit back and do nothing instead of trying to attack again.

Moyes is great for a team which will be happy with mediocrity, but will never achieve anything big, even if he was magically put at the helm of Real Madrid.
