2024/25 David Moyes

Martinez playing far better, more exciting football with almost the same side a year afterwards?
People always says this but the Everton side in Moyes’ final season played some fantastic football and finished on 62 points.

Martinez came in, built on that Moyes side by adding Lukaku. The world class striker Moyes was always searching for.

I do agree that Martinez played more exciting football. But it wasn’t far better and was actually the result of the platform Moyes had built and adding an 15 goal a seasons striker.

This, totally.

Absolutely. The further we got from the Moyes-era, the worse we played under Martinez. It became obvious pretty quickly how bad he was at organizing a team, our form started falling off already in the latter end of his first season.

Well said Mr Murphy.

Agree that Martinez profited from what Moyes had built. And then he rode his fortune and was found out.
If say the calibre of Carlo had come in I'm sure we're talking some sort of title with Lukaku and a James type signing. It still stands as the most recent opportunity lost for a proper tilt.
This doesn't mean that Moyes gets a reprieve here. He wasn't going to win titles with or without Lukaku imo. Maybe current Moyes would've.
More prescient I reckon is can current Moyes bring us to a similar situation, with haste.
And if so, will it be seen for what it is this time, and a better, bigger decision made.

Iirc, I remember Baines calling Martinez out (accidentally on purpose) whilst he was doing punditry on some game or other. Basically saying Moyes would practice set pieces loads, whereas BBS didn't. I seem to recall thinking it was a bit underhanded at the time.

Can’t agree with this .
But I think it’s subjective.
I wasn’t a great fan of Martinez but he was a far braver manager than Moyes will ever be.
Moyes is a defensive .risk averse ,manager .
There is a reason his teams always stumbled at decisive moments and games however well they had been playing beforehand.
In my opinion there is a lot of revisionism concerning the Moyes era at the moment.
He built good workmanlike teams , and for a period we held the slightly risible and spurious title of ‘best of the rest’ . But by the time he departed other teams were overtaking us with bolder more aggressive tactics.
Judging by his efficient but limited W. Ham sides I don’t think his ethos has notably evolved in his travels .

The Sunderland defending 😂😳

But our current players wouldn’t be able to control those long balls and certainly wouldn’t be able to finish like that.

The other telling thing is the movement. Players are looking for space, giving players options and asking for the ball. I forgot what that looked like.

Suggestion that Moyes, who spent half a season in Manchester, has ruined SAF's legacy for decades to come is a bit off mate.
And he left Everton much better than he found it.
That wasn't what I meant, it was more SAF was in the same mold, hence it was near impossible to replace him as he ran pretty much every aspect of United, similar to what Moyes did with us, and everywhere since.
Teams that do it well invest in a strategy, regrettably like the [Poor language removed] are doing atm

And also added Gareth Barry, James McCarthy, Ross Barkley, John Stones and Deulofeu. He changed virtually half the team, far from just adding Lukaku.

Er, no.

Youre portraying it like the manager was the bottleneck. Far from it. Moyes surely would have won stuff with that team if he only had got financial backing to compete. We had a great first 15 but no strength in depth and big holes in certain positions.
