2022/23 Dele Alli

He has shown he is better starting off a striker at Spurs. We should try him and Rondon up front in more of a 532 next week. But I doubt Gordon will ever be rested.

It's easy to see all sides of the argument on Dele.

However a good (brave!) manager will not take an expedient view. I get that most managers feel they have to make an immediate impact, but if they're given assurances re time to do their thing, they will want to build and develop - and so they should.

Dele is a conundrum. People saying his legs have gone - at 25 - cannot be serious. For me he is technically and instinctively twice the player that McNeil and Gray are, and as things stand that Gordon is.

I'm hoping Frank is seeing the potential in Dele returning to his best, and is willing to allow him time to get there, and protect him along the way. That's a big risk, but in my view, one worth taking.

The £20m payment is a smokescreen btw. I'd guess it has zero impact on the financial thinking of the club's management.

Very well said.

Unfortunately this 40m deal we are told of has put a massive chain around his neck.

Free transfer and the pressure us off nobody cares

You mean Dele mate? I doubt it has. If he'd not gone for this opportunity, where do you imagine he'd be right now?

Frank took the gamble, but otherwise Dele would be training with Spurs' reserves.

Yes . It has from our perspective we now demand and expect 40m results on the pitch.

I know I'm not disputing any of that my question was against the deal that we
" negotiated"

To get him here.

See now that’s a fair and well reasoned doubting of him and makes sense, but there are plenty on here who just call him crap and say ‘sell’.

The thing for me is that he’s not played in the system he thrived in since Poch left Spurs because all managers since we’re defend first and press from the front whereas Poch let Dele and Eriksen ghost around and find space and relied on their midfield and defence to do the defending. If we have two of Gana/Onana/Doucoure with their legs and strength in front of a proper defence which looks doable now Tarkowski and Coady are in the door we can give him the freedom to be Dele again.
He needs to be off a proper striker though, he clearly can’t lead the line on his own!
I was really hoping for a front three of DCL with Dele left and either of Gordon/Gray/McNeil right before Don’s injury.
I just think he doesn't seem to have the drive to want to be good again. Maybe there is something going on we don't know about but from what we can see it appears like he wants to mess around instead of taking his career seriously.

Its looking very unlikely he will ever recover the standards he used to have. Who would actually want to sign him from us now? You would expect he will end up in a mid table Turkish club or go back to mk dons or something.

And I have no doubt Dele wouldn't be arsed in the slightest at not playing. He didn't push for a move or even a loan when he wasn't playing under Mourinho, or Nuno, or Conte and he doesn't seem to be too bothered about being a bit part player here.

From the outside, it looks like he's quite content to pick up the money, do a bit of training every day, have a kick about with the lads, spot of lunch at the canteen etc and any game time at the weekend is a bonus if it comes along.

Get rid and get someone Lampard wants and someone who is hungry and on the up rather than well past their best.
It looks very much like Lampard wanted Dele.

I think he thought he could get a tune out of him.

But then it seems that Deles lack of effort maybe in training or something, means he doesnt want to play him.

You take the gamble, you gotta back yourself and get him in the team, I get it, its hard, you have to be fair to the other players who are making an effort, putting in the hard yards, but sometimes you just gotta put trust in a player who can win you football matches if hes in the mood.

Thought he made a difference yesterday immediately his runs had defenders all over the show. I want to see more of him not less

I've been thoroughly unimpressed in both games. He gets on the end of absolutely nothing in the final third, and his pressing is just non existent. He's a luxury player who no longer even offers flashes of his quality.

At what point do we go from talking about Dele's "potential" to become the player he was 3-4 years ago and accept that he's just one of those players who once upon a time was great for a bit but never will be again.

He could easily go the way of Ravel Morisson: getting clubs and contracts here and there because once upon a time he did bits.

We're paying him best part of £100k a week and seemingly have no real plan or use for him. Depending on the specifics of the deal, he's a "bit part luxury" who could end up costing us at least £20m by the time his contract expires.

Either play him in his best role with full games or move him on, assuming there would be a taker for him he'd want to go to.

See I don't really understand this argument. The player was signed the same day the manager came in so clearly was already in the pipeline. The manager then started him zero times until we were safe, and then won't even play him in a striker crisis the next season.

All the evidence to me points to the manager not rating the player, and can you blame him based on his performances?

The player is finished at the top level. He can't even find space in the box anymore like he did with ease under Pochettino. What's his role now because he offers nothing out of possession?
