2022/23 Dele Alli

I mean, it really wasn't a BAD deal per se. We basically had 20 games to figure out if he was worth anything. His wages are extortionate tho.
‘20 games’ were we have committed to giving him approx £16m good, bad or indifferent over 2.5 years, despite his career quite spectacularly and publicly falling off a cliff.
It was a classic ‘what would Everton do?’ deal.

Think of it another way, would you pay a £10m loan fee for 1 season? That is effectively what it is now. 1 year on contract. Surely we are not going to offer him anything further. So 1 season, £10m plus wages. Let's call it £16m all in. Would you?

Dyche could play him for the first couple of games, or so, without activating the first £10m instalment, to see if he offers anything. If Dyche decided he didn't like what he saw, then we've lost nothing other than the wages we would still be paying Alli if he didn't play. If it turns out that the player has got his head together and can offer something of value, that £10m could be well worth it... depending on where we finish in the League, etc.
Actually, I believe the add-ons could rise to as much as £40m

He will have decided whether he likes him or not in training.
Lampard cba with him after seeing him train and he actually wanted him.
There is no way Dyche puts him on the pitch competitively unless he is at least matching the training effort of his peers. He won’t.
Christ even Iwobi has been making jokes about his lack of effort in training.

So has Dele Alli returned to training? I thought he was still in 'rehabilitation' and trying to sort himself out. To be honest, I've not been following anything much about Everton since the season ended.

Not sure anyone would be able to tell the difference tbh.
Puts about as much effort in as a cone.

Our accounts are yearly so if we paid 2.5m instead of 5m during that year to a non playing player it’s better financially, especially as every penny counts. I’m not sure why we are even debating that?
Could you expand on what you think would happen if the club let him go on a “free”. Do you think his contract would be ripped up on that day?
We are a business, we need cashflow for the business to survive.
You do understand that financial accounts are a historic summary of a business and not its day to day trading?
If we are struggling for cashflow right now as it seems it is far better to pay 52 x weekly rather than an upfront payment, in the same way the value of money on 10% inflation means £1m today is worth £900k in 12 months time.
Now I could be wrong regards contracts, but I was always under the impression that if we sold a player to X tomorrow, we would stop paying him straight away, if I'm wrong on that then I've learned something new today.

And as you say every penny counts, so why are we rolling over and giving away £2.5m if there is a chance we could sell/give him away to another club for free?

Easier said than done though. ‘Free’ isn’t actually free as he’s owed around £10m in wages alone (by us). So someone has to be willing to pick that up, and on the evidence of the last 3-4 seasons, who would do that?
Any recruitment team seeing him as an opportunity would have to be more dysfunctional than ours and that’s going some. He couldn’t even perform to an acceptable level in Turkey, anyone willing to drop £10m on him would need their faculties checking.
There is the outside chance a Saudi / ME team will pick him up - but will he want to go? Can he pursue the pleasures his life offers him here, in Saudi (balloons, tonic wine and instagramming him and his tart ½ naked)….

Yes that’s the case, but I can’t imagine with MSP now also financially burdened and invested in the business, they would honestly let a needed cashflow of just a couple of million pounds (when they’ve just found £130m spread between numerous investors) to be the sole decision. I’m hoping that they take a bit of control now. From an overall position for a better governed club if you can avoid definitely paying £5 odd million by paying half it’s a decision you take. The agents want money as well, clauses are made and agreed to especially if his next club are not offering the same money and if he hasn’t asked to leave. It’s an awful decision to give the club to make and another on the watch of Chairsitting contract negotiatior Bill. Moshiri is clearly daft to agree and let this craziness carry on but these are the sort of decisions they blunder, trying to clean up after themselves.

I literally said that the wages were insane. The deal itself, with the setup in payments, wasn't awful and was, in fact, pretty creative.

He's owed 5m. This is his last year of his contract with us.

Understood. I just have difficulty splitting the transfer fee from the contract.
For me at least it was at least a £16m deal potentially rising to £56m.
What ever way it’s dressed up, personally think / thought it was a disaster.
