Confirmed Signing Demarai Gray

I’ll preface this by saying I’m happy with both Gray and Townsend but I find it hilarious how people are going on about how good of business Gray is and how awful Townsend is.

In actual fact Townsend has played at the top level consistently for his whole career, is free and only just turned 30 days ago yet Gray hasn’t shown much in his career aside from being a good prospect as a youth and was only sold by Leicester in January after not impressing for years.

It’s actually mad how people make their minds up on players on things like their age or the club they came from and not actually how they played or their ability anymore, Townsend coming in off of being one of Palace’s more important players last year to fill a spot on our empty bench for free and on low wages, it’s decent business.

He came across really well in the interview. Sounds delighted to be here, has been told that he’s a squad player and said that he’s looking to prove that assessment wrong & become a starter. Love that attitude.

Welcome Andros.

Not that fussed with him but he's the right sort of character we need coming into the squad in terms of a reliable bench player.

As usual the Anti Benitez Carlo Cult would rather bitch and moan when just months ago they were crying over the "poisonous dressing room atmosphere" "lazy players" "we need players who want to play for the club"

Long as he's a squad player and not on mad wages its pretty much whatever for me I'll be judging more on the quality of the starting 11 signings.

Isn't that just more crosses?

Not necessarily.

It's all about stretching the pitch and having balance. Last season, teams could just stop us getting it to James or Digne and, well, that was about it. Now, we clearly should have worked around that in training but we didn't - and that was abundantly obvious in the back half of the season.

If we do get Dumfries in, for example, it should help free Digne up. It should help free space up for a player in the middle - which is why keeping James should absolutely be done because I can't think of a better player outside of the top 3 or 4 teams to have in that area of the pitch with space afforded to him.

£20m on both - £40m combined.

Don't think either of them are a waste. I do think Carlo didn't know how to use them last season at times though.
Not sure there's a good way to use Doucoure honestly. The least bad way would be in a midfield three with a proper ball winner and someone else to take care of the passing so he can just drift into the box and look to score a few. That's going to be hard for us to find and leaves all sorts of current players in flux so that we can have someone who was our 8th best player do the best he can.

Allan sure, he's fine, but he almost played less than James and is only getting older. Poor business that leads to things like the subjects of this thread.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Doucoure play more advanced this season.

He's at his best off the ball.

I can't sensibly say Doucoure and Allan were incredibly poor business when a year earlier we spent £28m on Iwobi, mate, as much as you love him.

Oh man this is such a bad thing to say about a midfielder

Not really the name we were hoping for with Andros Townsend but as a squad player, on a free, on a relatively short contract, I'm okay with it. Not a bad premier league player by any stretch and seems to have a really good attitude. Hope he works hard, pushes players for that first team spot and makes an impact here, if by some miracle we got Europe this season he's the perfect kind of player to have in Europa league games etc.
