2023/24 Demarai Gray

When Dyche came in Gray didn't have much competition. But it seemed like Dyche had a judgement made about him already. Gray is inconsistent but on his day he can pull something out of nothing. He needs to feel valued and there is nothing wrong with that.

A very good option off the bench. His goals vs Arsenal, City and assist vs Palace were critical in our safety.

Bad managers are ruthless too. Benitez binned off players to our detriment as well. Gray ain't the best but our already wafer thin squad is getting thinner. We will have Danjuma, McNeil and Harrison for the wide positions, three players for two positions, unless you think Garner looks good out wide. Hint - he doesn't.
Good point. Will never forgive Benitez for dismantling one of the best and most exciting Everton sides in my lifetime.

The difference? Gray isn't close to being the profile of a Digne or Jameth.

Danjuma, McNeill, Harrison and Dobbin. That's two per position and is about right imho, any more and squads get bloated, with a player or two (Doucoure, Garner) who can do 50% of the job in the event of a bigger injury crisis - Dyche plays these two as right or left midfielders, rather than wingers.

I don't see Gray as a regular starter, but he's only an injury or two away from starting, given our current squad. I don't see any reason why we would let him go at this stage, given our lack of numbers.

Over the course of the season, he has proven that there will be at least a couple of times he will find a goal that wins us a point, or wins us a match. That's much more useful to us than leaving a place on the bench empty, or adding more keepers to the bench. We will need every single point we can get this year.

It was suggested yesterday that his beef was actually more with the club higher ups rather than Dyche himself. It's clear that he's seen his role diminish over the summer and wanted to move on to be a 'bigger fish' somewhere else, but since we messed up the end of the transfer window he's being made to stay.

I do get why he's upset.. I just don't agree with the public airing of it. Hopefully we move swiftly towards a positive resolution for all parties. For what it's worth, I'd like him to stay if he agreed to just get his head down now & help the team.
