After seeing a myriad of different opinions on the matter, he's my take, as Demba Ba's self proclaimed number 1 fan, and a (usually) pessimistic Evertonian.
1.) Just because he didn't sign for us does not make him crap. He's a quality striker, and all things considered, better than anything we offer now.
2.) £50K a week was a good amount for someone of his calibre, contrary to what a lot of you were saying. £70K however, which is seemingly what Newcastle offered and he wanted us to match, was not. Moyes was quite right to turn him down after that, because he's not worth it.
3.) However horrendous his agent fees were he seemingly did not require a transfer fee. So in terms of cash up front, Newcastle have themselves a good deal. You just have to get over the scumbaggery of the agents' paydays.
4.) This is the point that's annoying me most. I've seen people saying "Oh well, Saha, Beckford and Anichebe will have to do", "Beckford's will have a lot of weight on his shoulders next season" etc etc. For the sake of [Poor language removed], it is June. There's what? 10 weeks left in the window? 11 weeks? Get a grip.
5.) If I see another "he's just after a payday" judgemental post I'm going to headbutt my monitor. Seemingly they offered him 40% more a week than we did. Footballers have a very transient career with no real safety net. Who here would turn down a 40% pay rise? As for the few I've seen saying words to the effect of "I wouldn't want a mercenary wearing the number 9"... well ffs. Do you think any of our strikeforce are any different? Saha's been getting £60K a week the past year to sit at home injured. Yet again, get a grip. It's a job.
Anyway, he's good, I'd have loved him to sign for us... but £70K a week is too much. It would unsettle our wage structure, because loyal players would feel undervalued. Moyes was completely right. Demba was well within his rights, too. Newcastle are used to paying over the odds, so let them do so once again.
Peace.
