Dc is not a good way of transmitting electrical power over long distances as you can't easily step up the voltage to reduce the impact of resistance.

Won't pretend to understand the details, but I believe advances in technology for how the power is handled at either end of the line make it actually more efficient than AC nowadays, although the set-up costs are high:

As for a scientific discovery I'd like some kind of machine that enables someone to accurately feel another persons pain or other physical sensation. It'd be great for diagnosing stuff. It'd also be good for calling out soft-arses and blaggers or alternatively encouraging empathy with genuine sufferers.

I suppose they could use enormously powerful switch mode supplies - but I can't comprehend of the size of semiconductor to handle that power! Plus high voltage dc is lethal. Even more so than ac. I presume though that they've thought all this through.
