Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

So yesterday I had an MRI scan, and it confirmed that I had suffered a mini-stroke. On Monday was in the shower and was dizzy, and then had slurred speech for about 20mins or so. When I got to work my line manager instructed to at least ring 111, and then ambulance/hospital came etc. Consultant on the phone said it was minor (and "minor minor").

I feel fine, can't drive until the stroke team say so, but I feel fine. However off work - worried about finances (have taken holiday this week, not sure on next week). Not sure if I can play football, I've been actively trying to lose weight and have football training tonight, 7aside Thursday. Can get a lift to both but not sure if I should be completely resting, active, go-ahead? Wife is particularly worried, apart from the back of the mind "could happen again", I'm pretty much okay, it is what it is, but have no idea what to do.

I assume get some rest, but also researching online says "overly" resting is an issue, a good nights sleep should be plenty of recovery and not to sleep in the daytime as it can't be detrimental?
Not much to add to what others have said - write down your questions, ask about your diet/lifestyle and all that. Do you get any sick pay at work? If you are in the UK you might be eligible to claim benefits if you are off sick for any length of time but to be honest. it is a pain on the butt to apply for them. So many hoops to jump through.

Hi everyone. I run a men's mental health organisation called TALKHUB C.I.C and we are doing a men's walk and talk before the Sporting Lisbon game on Saturday. We will be meeting at Stanley park car park at 12.15 and setting off at 12.30 for a lap around the park and back to Goodison for a photo outside the Dixie Dean statue. If any guys would like to come along then you are more than welcome to. Thanks, Jay. https://www.evertonfc.com/news/3602934/talkhub-walk-and-talk-ahead-of-goodison-friendly

Absolutely top shelf mate! I know as men it’s hard for us to open up about our mental and emotional issues. And for the most part it’s because we don’t feel like anyone will care or support us if we do.

Speaking from personal experience here…

Exactly what he said up there… Providing a safe haven for men to feel secure to open up is the first step.

Speechless mate. What you’re doing is truly commendable.

I love the idea!

Thinking I'll find if there's one going on near me in Denver - good for the soul and the soles.....

Or I'll get up and walk at the same time as you all and pretend I'm headed for a match....

Statuary sick pay i imagine - I've used my Holidays this week and I have 3 left to use next week. I wanted to go into work Wednesday but my mate said "is that the best idea" and figured I'd just take the week.

I've been really, really effing scared the past couple of days, mentally fatigued, physically fatigued - I understand that its my brain repairing itself so the energy consumption is higher and I usually feel weak/tired at around 7/8pm even though im sat in a chair all day.

Anyway the stroke nurse, who was looking after me in A and E just rang, have to have an ECG that is wearable for 2 days, and a scan of my heart and some medications, but she re-iterated it was very a very small stroke with the language centre of the left side of my brain.

I'm typing okay and articulate (at least the normal level), but just lose my train of thought often or struggle to think of the right word.

i CANNOT imagine those who have had a full on stroke or anything worse. I really, really sympathise for you.

Melatonin has good results as a sleep aid but also as an anti inflammatory. Do plenty of walking rather than football for a while. I've a friend who had virtually the same symptoms as you describe when he was 60,he's preparing to celebrate his 78th birthday later this month.

Gonna do plenty of walking and light duties at footy, play in goal and just help out at training rather than be full on active.

Wonderful hearing about your friend.

I'd honestly keep away for a while at least anything that remotely risks a knock to the head even with the lightest of balls.. Depending on how forward thinking your doctor is ask him about Niacin.
My friend used it with really rapid results.

I will ask my mother to pick some up today and drop it off. Thanks mate.

Get ready for the flush it can be scary but it soon passes. Make sure she gets Niacin and not Niacinamide. The flush is the Niacin opening up all the smaller veins,it's alleged to improve hearing, eyesight and memory. But then that's not proven as it costs comparatively little so they'll never do any meaningful clinical trials. 500mg is a good start.

What do you mean the flush mate?
