Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

This is more anxiety but does anyone else suffer with concentration? Like examples watching the tele , watch the match , talking to someone and listening ? My head spins with that much pointless stuff that I don't really need to worry or think about but I can't stop it ? Usually resulting in bad head aches as well . My mind is always on the go which impacts things I try and do . Even listening to a podcast in the gym I hardly know what I've listened to after it's finished because my mind can't switch off and is thinking about all other types of crap.

I'm on stuff pills for anxiety. But this won't stop . It's more annoying than anything .
I go walking mate - that's when I have those conversations with myself. I find the combination of the exercise and the chance to work through stuff while I'm doing it really helpful. Usually time it so that when I get back, I get straight on with tea, and shortly after that, the missus gets back in from work. It's when I'm by myself and don't have anything else to focus on that my demons surface, so I make a point of seeing that coming and keeping busy to ward it off.

Just thought I'd let you all know my boys battle got to much and I had to have him pts Wednesday. I've never ever felt pain like this I'm going through every emotion possible, my vet said it was the right thing to do as it was starting to effect him more and he would of got worse.

You did the right thing by your little mate...the last act of loving kindness you could possibly show him. Ive been through it and the hurt is awful but you know, he was very very lucky...because he had someone who cared for him so much throughout his life...You. I know with each of mine, they were/are always another family member not just pets and you get back what youve freely given...unconditionally. Give yourself time.

Yes have this from time to time. It's worse in stressful periods. I can perfectly read work related things but not relaxing books and such, watch sport (strangely enough it only affects watching football teams I'm invested in, not neutral teams)... My usual coping strategies: do something else, talk to somebody while doing stuff (like when you're getting a massage talk to the massage therapist; usually helps for me - obviously will not work for you since you also have it when talking to people), handkerchief, oh it also helps to do dangerous things that usually brings you right in the moment, sometimes powering through it can help (no surrender). Have more coping strategies but can't recall them at the moment.

Also could it not be a side effect of some of your medication?
i don't think it's a side affect of my meds as it's something I've suffered with for years . Though it's something I notice a lot more these days . Maybe that's because I've got more time on my hands . Nearly 2 years out of work doesn't help either I suppose .

Oh yes things like being out of work or such certainly don't help. Your mind has a lot more time to wander off. After a certain amount of time you've depleted all the things you can do to occupy yourself in a fun way. You also get less excitement from previously fun activities. Also a lot of people consider work as an important part of their identity. This is the reason I never want to retire. It would be very unhealthy for me.

Haven't read the entire topic, so apologies if this has already been suggested, but maybe you could try some charitable work or such. Maybe that would help you out a bit.

Sorry to read that. Guess there's only so many things you can do to fill the time. It's great that you do what you do with that time though, and if you're into karma and all that, it will pay off. The important thing is that you are aware of your demons and more often than not, you're keeping them at bay.

cheers mate

I know from some of your previous posts, that previously you'd been in an extremely stressful situation for a long time ?.

I'm not a medical expert, but from suffering from my own anxiety problems for a long time and my own research I've done, as a result of there being very little help out there, I believe a lot of chronic anxiety problems are caused by the overproduction of the stress hormone Cortisol.

It's produced under normal circumstances as part of the waking up process, but is also produced during periods of extreme stress, as part of the bodies "'fight or flight " programme.

However if you're placed in an extremely stressful situation for a long time, you're body overreacts to every little thing that worries / stresses you out and produces too much of it, leading to anxiety and all the symptoms you describe. You're almost in a " loop " of anxiety.

Have a look at CORTISOL and see what you think ?. It sounds to me as this is what is happening mate.

There are various things that can help - avoid caffeine and alcohol. Excercise, CBT, take zinc, magnesium and vitamin b. There are natural sedatives such as Valerian Root which can help.

I bet you also sleep badly too and wake up with a bang, thinking all kinds of mad things and feel anxious from the moment you wake ? ( too much Cortisol in the system ).

The problem with anxiety, is that it's so hard to treat, that it's almost ignored to an extent by the medical professional.

Hope this helps ?

Great post. It's true, cortisol is the 'stress hormone'.

If you look on YouTube for TED Talks Amy Cuddy the Harvard Psychologist shows that cortisol levels change according (amongst other things) to our body language.

In other words we can feel less stressed if we act less stressed......even if inwardly we are feeling really unconfident.

Fascinating and hopeful for all of us who have anxiety or depression difficulties.

The other herbal remedy my doctor has recommended to me is St John's Wort.

Good luck.

I posted here previously and was inundated with positive counsel and support which was incredible. I then vanished as the mental trauma became overwhelming to point i couldn't respond or even discuss my plight further. As time has transpired i find myself in even further strife as i'm currently residing with friend who could be viewed as a saint. I'm residing in a remote decrepit town in eastern Pennsylvania that is devoid of culture and i feel like im decomposing as a human being. I'm in such a desolate state looking for some form of contact and connection even with a possible significant other yet i feel so insecure and abject of worth. Also I can't seem find individuals of substance to socialize with. Honestly i just want to find someone who enjoys the work of Joy Division which i did briefly but found myself soon rejected after vibing with. Being in a predicament where i find desolation everywhere I've begun to unravel further fixating on my perceived deficiencies where my interest in joy division is beginning to manifest in darker and more permanent impulses. I don't know what to expect to hear but i just need some positive interaction once again apologies if my post was grating

Good advice mate. I've also tried some of the natural remedies. Magnesium works but upsets my stomach. Valerian gives me nightmares and doesn't work. Also tried fish oil (krill) didn't notice a difference. Lemon balm tea-notice an affect. Lavender in my bath, very soothing. The thing that worked the most for me was ashwaganda, but side effect.
