Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

Just read an interesting article in the Guardian about a 5 a side initiative in Wigan to help men with mental health issues. Just glad that awareness is growing. Would like to think there is a similar initiative going on in every area.
Its boxing where I'm from in Telford mate. I went to wonder in last Saturday just to try and help me sort my head out even though I would probably not open up but I chickened out at the last minute at the door and turned round again.
Its called all star boxing club in Shifnal if anyone is interested. Its 1.30 on a Saturday.

Nice one. I hope you can Sort things out mate. Either at the boxing club or some other way. Any initiative is positive but I think it's great that people are actually using football and boxing in this way. Seeing as they could definitely be perceived as classic 'man up' evironments.

I don't know roydo or the latest but I send my prayers to you and your wife mate. I've had a difficult year myself which it now feels selfish to go into but I've also just relapsed after several months without drinking and now spiralled into self loathing. Keep your heads up guys and one thing I truly believe is that the answer is within. Take care blue brothers X

I enjoy a few beers mate
It chills me as long as its a few not a big session

I can't stop mate that's the problem. It's all or nothing. And nothing means I stay at home and think too much.

Saw a friend on saturday for the first time in months, he'd moved away for a while for, erm, reasons... he was absolutely fried on coke and booze, lost loads of weight and just rambling nonsense to himself. He's made some bad choices that have basically caught up with him the last month or so (dodging child support for 15 years and just landed with a bill for €100,000)

Was awful to see. Literally sobering. I'd gone to the bar at 2130 for a few and was tucked up by 2300. Was a wake up call in terms of seeing somebody medicate themselves to the extent that they've broken their mind. Horrible.

Alcohol is the drug many people forget is still a drug at the end of the day. One of the biggest issues with alcohol for me is that it's accepted socially and thus is harder to regulate and monitor with people because it's perfectly normal for someone to drink. Have one too many pints in a pub and it's par for the course, take out a syringe and someone will take notice.

Fortunately, like mentioned above, there are support groups out there and GP's to talk to if someone gets in a bad way. The poster obviously is conscious and admissive of the issue which is a really good sign.

I had issues with alcohol when I was younger, not to the same levels, and it was purely down to being able to numb myself without anyone raising suspicion. "Who would notice if an 18-year old got drunk?", I'd tell myself.

Nah mate there's nothing near me I'm in rural Spain. Today is my first day dry.. Im an alcoholic but I can beat it. Thanks for your words

That's a shame but make sure you have family/friends/neighbours around you can turn to if you don't think you can beat it. Maybe even ask the local bars/shops to not serve you for a while? Every little helps I guess.

Jeez not sure I wanted to read that in my current state of mind. But I'm really confident I can beat it. I used coke to facilitate being able to drink more. Nuts when you think about it. It was great when I was in my 20s and 30s but hate myself now on the rare occasions I relapse

I managed not to drink for 4 months and only started drinking over Christmas. But I drank two weeks solid.. Last night I had 6 cans and a bottle of wine for example. That's just sitting in on my own. Mind you I blame Everton for that. I'm certain I can do this and my wife is supportive so we can beat it together
