Distin - Leaving ? Now at Bournemouth

Stuck up for him at the start of the season and felt people were jumping the gun in writing him off. Now though I'm in agreement with everyone else, he's finished and of all the players we're desperate to see cleared out in the summer he looks to be the one most nailed on to go.

It's a shame that things look to be ending on a bad note but when you're almost 40 and apparently can't handle being dropped or being criticised then you're asking to be shown the door. He's really been a mixed bag for me, in the years we've had him he's had some fantastic performances and some truly unbelievable, nightmarish ones. He's always been an old-fashioned defender though and Martinez was always going favour ball-players like Stones and Alcaraz. He must have known deep down his days were numbered from the day Roberto first came in.

I would personally keep Alcatraazaz, hes not great, but hes not totally bad and does have some decent games, he should be 4th choice, with Stones, Jags and Galloway/Browning given a little gametime next season.

Thats providing either of those have "got it", if the young lads arent up to it, I mean Galloway is 19? Well then we defo need 4 CBs, so in that case Distin would need replacing.

But he has been fit and available on the bench for many more - the post I was replying to made it sound like he had spent almost the entire time injured.

Personally think he is perfectly fine for the role he was brought for - 4th choice CB as even the rich six hardly have superb players in thar position. And as @mkrudden has pointed out it hasn't It isn't as if he has been heading in own goals in each of thise matches like he did away at S'ton last year.
Yep, I agree. But RM thinks he's better than Distin, which is ludicrous.

Absolute nonsense. Watch the first few games of the season again - Distin was playing better than Jags FFS. Jags has slowly regained his form, but Distin is still better than Alcaraz.
I'm not a big fan of Alcaraz, but he played better on Sunday than Distin has at any time this season. Distin has been a great buy for us, but his time has come.

Back at you lad, apart from the odd brain fart alcaraz has been alright this season, certainly better than distin. And although jags was pretty shocking to begin with, hes been back to normal for a quite a while now.

Distin is way over the hill this season in everything hes done

If all 3 are fit yes. We've got Barry and Hibbert who could do a job there in an emergency or Galloway and Pennington who would be my u21 partnership. I'm not totally against keeping Alcaraz its just whether he would be happy being 4th choice.

He's been that for the last two years. I think he's come to terms with his role at us, no bigger club (or any other Premier League club for that matter) would seriously consider him as a starter.

Alcaraz is alright IMO - slow as a tax rebate, prone to giving away silly Heitinga-esque fouls for grappling when it's not necessary and occasionally makes a silly decision when in possession, but in his favour he is a threat from set pieces, is comfortable on the ball and is a generally decent defender. As a 4th choice centre back, he's not that bad and I could live with him getting a new contract.

Distin has been great for us but his time is up. 37 now, no disgrace to be losing it at that age. Whether his omission has more to do with his reported falling out with Martinez is another matter, he's been shocking this season for the most part and it would be silly to prolong his stay here at his age.

I'm coming round to the idea of giving Alcaraz a new one year contract. I'd still sign someone else but this would allow us to let Browning go out on loan safe in the knowledge we aren't going to be left short. If Alcaraz is happy with maybe playing only 5-10 games depending on cup runs and his wages are as low as suggested it just buys us some time.

I think he was unfairly scapegoated for much of our defensive frailaties early in the season. Granted he wasn't good and age may have caught up with him but Jags, Howard, and Barry (plus our defense on the right side was getting blitzed w/o Coleman) all struggled and yet Bob stuck with them week after week. I hope he could catch on with another side (say doing the Yobo thing in Turkey) for a couple more years. He's been an excellent servant to the club. For someone who was probably brought in to be a 2-3 year stopgap after the Lescott thing he lasted much longer and has not only been arguably been better than Lescott, he's been on our short list for POY a couple of times.

I think he has been scapegoated a bit. However lets be honest, when a player is 37 earning top money hey are only doing so for being able to provide good performances in the here and now. They have no sell on value and very little left in the tank for providing future performances. The moment Distin's form dipped he was inevitably going to be bombed out.

It is quite ruthless and harsh on him. It's not all Distins fault. However is there any point persevering with a 37 year who's performances are no longer good enough. He's not going to get any better. He's been an excellent servant for us and I wish him well, but it is time for us to move on.
