Every day a schoolday. Fascinating documentary on RTE atm. I have learnt loads in this programme and I thought I knew the history

I was at the "Shamrock Rovers" all Ireland team v Braziil match in 1973. .

Just around 7 or 8 but I remember it so well.

Derek Dougan was never picked for NI again as he and Giles were the main organisers. Neither the FAI nor the IFA were happy with the fixture. FFS it was against the World champions - it united North and South players for a day

Massive crowd I remember

Back in the day you used to have players, playing for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland eventually FIFA put a stop to it though.

I don't mind seeing the Northern Ireland team do well, although obviously not everyone south of the border would share those sentiments.

Bingham was a disgrace, conducting the fans as they chanted "Trick or Treat" shortly after the Halloween Greysteel massacre.

Alan McDonald RIP is praised rightly by Niall Quinn for going into the ROI dressing room afterwards and wishing the team the best. It was a poisonous night. I know Jack Charlton was livid with Bingham after the match.

Although we scraped through, Quinn described it as the lowest point of his soccer career

In an ideal world I would like a united soccer association as in rugby, hockey and cricket. However, a lot of damage has been done over the decades, and I would have no confidence in the geniuses running the IFA and FAI.

In 82 and 86 we were backing them in the WC. In recent years they are more acceptable. But 93 was toxic. Kids pointing sticks at the ROI bus and pulling imaginary triggers goaded on by a plonker with a UVF flag.

My mood has no bearing whatsoever on this thread, which will undoubtedly cause aggro.

So be it- if that makes YOU happy
Lots of other threads for you to add your high intellect. This is World Football - the documentary was excellent about the split from the IFA and FAI. Sorry if that offends

The north was one horrible place that time. There was the greysteel massacre and the shankill road bombing that year alone. Thank god since the good friday agreement (the Omagh bombing apart), that relative peace has come to the province.

I'm not offended in the slightest. Having been here for 12 years I know how the thread will descend.

But you crack on eh

Oh and don't patronise me. You wanna throw insults about let's go for it. Nowt else to do.

The late great Con Houlihan, with whom i had the pleasure of sharing drinks in Mulligan;s in the 80s was at the game. For those who don't remember him he was a brilliant journalist for the Evening Press and a lovely gentle Kerry giant. Anyway when GSTQ came on he was seated and someone beside him barked at him to stand. Con drew himself up to his full 6ft 5 and the idiot beside him quickly sat down

RIP Con. The only person I ever met whose poison was brandy and milk. He was in the Garda Club late one night and the barman had to go out to a late opening shop and get milk specially for Con.

He played rugby in his bare feet as a youth which apparently was normal in Kerry back then

My best mate is a Glens fan; @laudo9 and @RFCbluenose are two of my favourite posters on here. I sing in a CofI Cathedral choir.

This was an historical documentary from which I learnt so much despite my years. There is no need for anything to descend

I never realised the impact of the Leinster FA on pulling away from the IFA as the split happened

There is no excuse for what Bingham did that night - that doesn't mean I can't have reasoned debate with fellow humans no matter what their views.

Peter Farrell (my avatar) played for NI and captained the ROI. Eglinton also played for both

There was a massive underlying issue which directly related to what happened and why it happened. Said issue will be practically unavoidable to discuss without someone upsetting someone.

Hence the thread will probably end up canned. As have, IIRC, several others of a similar topic over the years.
