Every day a schoolday. Fascinating documentary on RTE atm. I have learnt loads in this programme and I thought I knew the history
There was a massive underlying issue which directly related to what happened and why it happened. Said issue will be practically unavoidable to discuss without someone upsetting someone.
Hence the thread will probably end up canned. As have, IIRC, several others of a similar topic over the years.
LONDON DERRY
If you ever get a chance to see a play called A Night in November - a one man play, take it. Fantastic writing - funny, sad, poignant. It's about a Protestant who was at that match. The 'Trick or Treat' chant makes him question everything he was brought up to believe. Avoiding spoilers, he ends up flying off to America to support the Republic in the World Cup. Fantastic show. Think Patrick Kielty did it at one point.Bingham was a disgrace, conducting the fans as they chanted "Trick or Treat" shortly after the Halloween Greysteel massacre.
Alan McDonald RIP is praised rightly by Niall Quinn for going into the ROI dressing room afterwards and wishing the team the best. It was a poisonous night. I know Jack Charlton was livid with Bingham after the match.
Although we scraped through, Quinn described it as the lowest point of his soccer career
In an ideal world I would like a united soccer association as in rugby, hockey and cricket. However, a lot of damage has been done over the decades, and I would have no confidence in the geniuses running the IFA and FAI.

Can't see it. Linfield and the Glens will never give up their power. I wish it would happen though. NI supporters have cleaned up their act in recent years but I can't stand the sectarianism so pay very little attention to international football. I'd love to see a joint league but sectarianism is rife in the Irish League. Probably more trouble than it's worth.Mate it is one show I really want to see.
For an ex Everton manager Bingham really let himself down that night. Everton have welcomed all faiths, loads of Gers as well as ROI. How he could do what he did that night I will never understand.
People had been massacred.
Do you think the two associations will ever get back together?
My da told me that my granda played for the Glens. I've no reason to doubt him but he didn't really 'connect' with us so I know no more. Now going to watch "Belfast's Victory in Vienna: a Footballing Odyssey "which I recorded earlier - for my Glens mate Stevie.
I never knew about this - Glens were the first European Champions in 1914!!!!! This is truly a University night for me in football history
Coates' signet ring had a cockerel - that is now the Glens badge.

Met Con up at an all Ireland weekend in the early 90s.The late great Con Houlihan, with whom i had the pleasure of sharing drinks in Mulligan;s in the 80s was at the game. For those who don't remember him he was a brilliant journalist for the Evening Press and a lovely gentle Kerry giant. Anyway when GSTQ came on he was seated and someone beside him barked at him to stand. Con drew himself up to his full 6ft 5 and the idiot beside him quickly sat down
RIP Con. The only person I ever met whose poison was brandy and milk. He was in the Garda Club late one night and the barman had to go out to a late opening shop and get milk specially for Con.
He played rugby in his bare feet as a youth which apparently was normal in Kerry back then
The greatest player to play for the Republic of Ireland, is either one of Roy Keane Paul McGrath or Liam Brady.
The greatest player to player for Northern Ireland was George Best, with Norman Whiteside and Pat Jennings after him.
George Best though was the greatest football player, to come from this island in my opinion.
Mate it is one show I really want to see.
