In the 80s I worked as a barman when in college with two Sligo lads. First time I ever heard that phrase. Later in my last Government Department I had a colleague also a Sligo fan. All lovely lads. Well, we are 1899 and Sligo 1928. My Government colleague reckoned someone was researching the history to see if Sligo was founded earlier - that was 20 years ago!! I think we are the original SRFC

As posted earlier, Sligo fans were excellent at our last game at Milltown in 87. I will never forget that. Sad to see a bit of nastiness creeping in - those blinking flares should be banned and confiscated going into the ground
What is with the flares?

I hope you are not on about poor Richarlison!!!

Cheers mate.

Important history lesson for my two half Latin boys!!!
Thank God no one was badly injured or worse. It was one of the most toxic nights ever in international football. The small number of ROI fans that got in were afraid of their lives to show their support - even the FAI official that was interviewed in the doc said he was afraid to stand up when Ireland equalised. ROI should have had 400 tickets but the IFA witheld them.

What the hell was Bingham thinking? NI were not going to qualify. We supported NI in 82 and 86. He was encouraging horrible chanting about the massacre of innocents - I don't know if Jack )(RIP) ever spoke to him after that.

I would cross the street if I ever saw him - highly unlikely I know

My da told me that my granda played for the Glens. I've no reason to doubt him but he didn't really 'connect' with us so I know no more.
I know it's irrelevant to the discussion (and the next day) but for my own sake, I need to clarify that it was my Granda who didn't connect, not my da. I loved my da! (Apologies for the self-indulgence - couldn't get it out of my head when I re-read it)

Sadly all four of mine were dead before I was born. I would love to have met them. My maternal grandfather fought in the war of independence and the Civil War. As a history nut I would have enjoyed listening to his experiences.

His brother was executed by the Free State :-(

That sounds quite the story, Bluerover.

Thanks a lot!!! ;)
You are welcome mate - the ads at the beginning are annoying but stick with it. For any lover of soccer history it really is fascinating. One of the best documentaries I have seen on soccer @Sassy Colombian - if you want to broaden your knowledge even further, this is superb, if upsetting at times. The reason for the over 18 warning at the start is because it mentions terrible events

Bingham was a disgrace, conducting the fans as they chanted "Trick or Treat" shortly after the Halloween Greysteel massacre.

Alan McDonald RIP is praised rightly by Niall Quinn for going into the ROI dressing room afterwards and wishing the team the best. It was a poisonous night. I know Jack Charlton was livid with Bingham after the match.

Although we scraped through, Quinn described it as the lowest point of his soccer career

In an ideal world I would like a united soccer association as in rugby, hockey and cricket. However, a lot of damage has been done over the decades, and I would have no confidence in the geniuses running the IFA and FAI.
Neither would want to lose their cushy salaries , an amalgamation would mean job cuts

I have a vague recollection of seeing Finn Harps and one of the Rovers (Shamrock, I think) at the Coleraine Showgrounds early 70's in the Blaxnit Cup. Might have misremembered the teams but no way did I make Blaxnit Cup up. Was only a pup then, though.
